Im interested in hearing engine, and drive train combos that others have used to put a full bodied skylark into the 11s at sea level. I hope to add mine to this thread later this spring. Im mostly interested in the heads, cam, compression ratio, carb, gears and converter you are using to propel your naturally aspirated and nitrous free 3800-4000 lb skylarks into the 11s.

I will tell you what I used to run 11.50s with a 68 Skylark in the late 90s. The car was lightened up some with a fiberglass hood and bumper and had race seats and no heater or radio but did have a 10 point moly cage. It was mini-tubbed and ran M/T ET Street tires, 12.5x15s. I ran a 4.10 12 bolt gear with Moser spool and axles. I used a 400 turbo with a 3500 stall 10" TCI convertor. The engine was a true 9 to 1 C/R 462 inch 455 with Stage 1 valves and a K-B Maxi-3 cam and springs and retainers. I ran a K-B Wildcat intake with a 950HP Holley by Quick Fuel Technology. I used a Holley Anilinator Ignition and a MSD distributor and 2" K-B headers and 3" exhaust with Dynomax mufllers. It left at 2000 rpm and I shifted at 5000 and went through the traps at 5600. I ran this engine for 4 years and it was in the car when I sold it.

Well, I think I have all the parts to go 11's with the exception of my cam. My car weighs nearly 4100 lbs with me, 1/2 tank of gas, and nothing in the trunk. I've got great heads, 10.4:1 compression, SP-1 intake, SP 3200/1800 converter, 1000 Holley, and 3.73 gears. I was going to go with the TA288-92H, but now I think I'm going to see if I can get a custom roller cam. (maybe with the 4-7 swap if that project of Mike's happens)

Nope, you haven't told us how that motor was built. It also isn't as heavy as a Skylark/GS:laugh:

My advice is to port, port, then port some more.

Absolutely, heads are the key. The more flow, the better.:TU:

Not to jump in on your thread Whamo, but i'd be interested to see how many of these car's that run in the 11's are able to go around the corner to get ice cream with the kids or drive 2 hrs to the beach? Or still use fuctional cold AC?

Agreed, if they cannot do the above, they aren't street cars IMHO I want an 11 second time slip, but I won't rip out my A/C, and seats to do it. And I can drive my car anywhere.

I drove mine everywhere. I would take it down to Long Island to see the boys a few times a year. A/C blows 48 degrees all day long and the motor never got hotter than 200 degrees on the 90+ days.

I think I have the head porting covered on mine, but Im more interested in cam specs to be honest. Especially cam choices with ported TA heads like mine. I keep kicking around the idea of going to a milder cam for my engine. It would be nice to pull a little more vacum.

Steve, I run my 308S about 5° advanced and it's quite managable, though I believe my power brake booster has a larger volume than the A-bodies. I only have issues with brakes after about three full pedal pumps at idle. The worst I have to do is select neutral and brakes are back.

If you want some good advice from people who know how to set up our cars then call Bob and Goeff at Finishline. They will make you a cam to match your converter, gearing and amount of port work. :TU:

It looks like this build (the 2A) is the closest to mine. My intakes flow about 5 cfm less than the heads jim used at .500. I have slightly higher compression and smaller carb.

Hey Steve, my combo is pretty simple and I drive this car everywhere when its nice out ,35 min. rides to car shows, I use to drive 40 mins. to the drag strip with my ET street tires air up to 30 lbs. and run 11.70 with a SP-2 GSCA cam and go home. I have no air, no inner fender wells, even the hood is the original steel hood and the the same custom bench seat interior.

The latest motor 3 years now, is 462, 10.8-1 comp. and .037' Quench! , 70 heads ported heavy & polised chambers, GSCA Comp Cam, 525-537, 240-250 @ .050 with 430 rockers, performer intake (killing top end), and a 980 holley, I have a T/A intake I didn't use it. 3.73 gears, 3200 coan(too tight). 3 in. exhaust to the bumper, and manuel brakes. This motor has run several low 11.60;s after I get the plugs cleaned off. I haven;t changed them in 3 years!!! HA! HA! If it ain;t broke-don;t fix it!! Hope this give;s you a little food for thought. Pictures of my car are in V8 garage on page 4, look for j.staged.

Kick71, I know what you mean, my 12 year old son is usually with me, and my wife sometimes. Then pops in my 19 year old daughter to take the car for her joy ride and show off, and leaves us with the rag top for the trips to the the river, hate when that happens.
