Honestly, I'm a bit of an engine moron. But didn't I read someplace here that the timing gear bolts are thin headed so they won't rub the pump arm? Because when I eyeball it, that's what looks like might have hit the arm.

Hey, I'm a Northeast guy, I'm used to it. Bruce knows that all too well. I'm not sure he will ever live down the squished head incident:D, Doug won't let that happen.

That's a real common one Joe. They leak when cold then seal up when warm:D

So, I took a look at the pump arm and timing chain very carefully. The chain looks pristine with no evidence of rubbing on the links. Likewise, the bolts holding the cam gear on show no evidence of rubbing.

I know JW did some research on this pump with the bigger eccentric. He even used a timing chain cover that was "windowed to see how the pump arm contacts the bigger roller cam eccentric. I'm thinking he would have caught something like that. Also, the TA cover moves the pump forward a bit for that reason.

So the only thing I can think of is that the arm did self clearance, but not on my chain. The CV pump Jim sells is a SBC pump. Jim knocks the SBC pump arm out and installs a Buick arm. I'm thinking that pump arm did self clearance on someone else's engine. That pump arm has a wear plate, not so easy to find these days.

How's the cam button/bumper and block face, that's the important stuff. IF you pop intake off before you seal up tc, you would be able to check recommended cam end play with an indicator.
Just an idea while you're in there......:) Carry on Larry!

Block face looked great. Inside of the cover looked great. I am leaving well enough alone.

So I got the intake off, cleaned it up along with the splash shield. Touched up the paint a bit. Ready for assembly tomorrow. Gaskets came late.

Vacuum gauge. I wasn't using it inside anymore, so I figured I'd put it in the engine compartment. I mess around with the mixture screws a bit when the weather changes.

It's looking good Larry, no leaks yet. You're probably right about the pump arm if it was used.
