No, but I'd like to see what the temps are. Maybe an infrared gun.

We put this cooler in, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-51606/overview/ along with -6AN push lok hose through the frame.

It was definitely hot to the touch yesterday:)

I have to say I never ever ran a car without a seperate cooler. Am I to understand you used to run with the radiator trans cooler till just recently??

By the way, break her in right and it will last for many many passes!!!!

I do have a separate cooler Joe, it's just in series with the radiator cooler. The same way I ran with the SP transmission.

Wizard Freddy Brown told me not to do that if cooler fails you get anti freeze in your trans.

Naahh, I'm not worried about that. That's never happened to me. I'm more concerned with the cooler being enough for this converter. I'd like to know my transmission temperatures. I can either use an infrared reader or an actual gauge. Running it through the rad ensures you will not overcool the fluid in the winter, and I do like to drive it whenever the roads are clear.

Well, just got back from Cecil. The good thing is the weather was rain free and the trip down and back went without a hitch, the bad, my results were disappointing. I put about 360 miles on the car round trip, got an average of about 15 MPG. My car actually ran slower, mostly because I couldn't quite hook the car. On one run, I matched my best 60' of 1.623, and i had another run of 1.657, but the other 4 runs were all in the 1.7's. The car felt great with the new converter, it's a big improvement over the switch pitch driving around town. You can tell there is a converter there, but it isn't too loose and it plays nice with the Gear Vendors, my RPM on the highway is the same, about 2200 at 60 MPH. The weather on Friday was hot, about 85*, but it felt worse with high humidity. I heard calculated altitudes of 2500-2800', but who knows. It was definitely cooler last year especially in the morning. There was a much bigger difference when I bolted on the AED1000, it made a 1.5-2 MPH difference in my trap speeds. The car felt great going down the track, but the time slips told the story, my 60' times suffered. I used the same 16-17 psi inflation as I did last year. Some guys told me later that I should have been at 20-22 psi. Wish I had tried that. On the next to last run, I finally got a chance to look at my AFR gauge, and in high gear at WOT, it was reading 11.9. My AED was jetted 84 square with PV's front and rear. I went down 2 jet sizes to 82 in the front and left the rear alone. The car picked up almost 1/2 MPH and the AFR was still 12.2, too fat. That was my last run though as it was getting late. I tried different launch RPM's and it seemed to like leaving at about 2000 RPM, but I could feel it spin just a bit, and didn't get that dizzy feeling you get when the car dead hooks. I'd sure like to get the car down the track on a nice cool fall day. Maybe at Atco. It definitely wasn't a real good Cecil day. The last run produced my best to date trap speed of 116.06.

Well I get your feelings about not picking up a whole bunch with the upgrade or change, if you will. But you did pick up.

Here's the prob bro, in the mid 11's area your in, a tenth or two takes a whole bunch of HP!!!! I'd totally be happy with 11.60's. Especially with no cage .I don't want a cage in my car either .Especially since the car sees 95% street use. 5% track. Maybe be even more like 97/3!!

Glad you made the trip back and forth OK too!!

I bet on a cool day you will get thrown out!!!! Come to Etown. There are a bunch of days left and if you come I'll bring mine and run it too .I did the converter change myself .If you remember I was slipping about 1000 r's going thru the traps. So I gave up on my old GER and put in a JW 10inch. It feels alot different and I'm hoping to crack the 11's now myself. It went 12.20 I think 110 or so .Slipping really bad too lol So it wouldn't take too much more to get there .I never even changed plugs or touched the carb yet.

Let me know pal .I'm right around the corner from the track.

    Thanks Joe,
I think on a nice cool day with good air, I might have gone faster, but maybe this is what the car runs. This is the 4th year I have run the car in the 11's, so I can't complain. If I didn't have the Gear Vendors, I might be able to get away with a wilder converter. The shift points were great. Left it in drive and it went 1-2 at 5800 and 2-3 at 5700. Went through the traps at around 5600. Slippage was around 8%. The converter feels great driving around town and on the highway. Just have to figure out how to get it to 60' consistently.

I thought you were going to try manually shifting it this time out @ 6,000? I waited a whole year for you to manual shift it. LOL Oh well, maybe next year?

With the Gear Vendors you could of even split the shifts, 1st gear to 6,000 then 1st overdrive to 6,000 to 2nd gear to 6,000 to 2nd gear overdrive to 6,000 to 3rd. You might of even been able to go through the traps in 2nd gear overdrive? Why don't you want to try shifting manually? You can add a shift light if you think you don't have time to look at the tach.

Its your car Larry and you can drive it the way you want, but it sure would be cool to see if that Gear Vendors would make a difference keeping the RPM higher in the power range quarter mile driving?

Actually, the GV does not shift that fast. It will automatically split 1st gear, but when the 400 shifts to 2nd, you have to shut it off, then back on to get 2nd over, then shut it off when the 400 hits 3rd. There is too much of a lag to do that. I know that my engine would be OK at 6000, but it got close enough in DRIVE (5800). I could feel a much bigger difference between the QJ and AED with this converter. I think if I had leaned the AED out and got closer to 13.0 AFR, it might have picked up a bit more trap speed, and if I could have combined that with my best 60', the car would have set a personal best. I might run the car again in the fall. We will see.

That claim of splitting gears with the GV down the track is a pipe dream as far as I can see. There is just too much to do in 11 seconds, and like I said, the GV just doesn't shift that fast. It disengages fairly quickly, but there is a good second delay before it shifts once you hit the button. I could have went through the traps in second over, but my trap RPM was close enough for my comfort. I need a nice crisp fall day with high pressure and temps in the 50's or 60's.

Have you considered taking it to the GS Nationals? The air is always good in October and traction is excellent! Not too mention that you'll have a lot of club members on hand if you seek/need the help.

I'd be careful running 13:1 AFR, best power is around 12.5 if your meter is using 14.7 as stoich.

Tell you what Moishe, if you bring Big Red to BG next year, I might consider bringing Brownie. I'd want to tow it though, 910 miles is a long way to go if something happens.

Rob, I already have my airfare to Nashville this year. After leaning the front down 2 jet sizes, I was still at 12.2 from 11.9, so I have a ways to go for 13.5, but good to know. I had a 110 mix in the tank.

    Larry,

The air was indeed 2500 DA in the early AM but mostly 2800 DA the rest of the day. Water grains were also high therefore not typical good Cecil air!

I didn't know they shifted that slow, manual shift to 6,000 or how about 5,900 just to see if more RPM will equal less QM time? Maybe a 2nd gear overdrive through the traps if the RPMs aren't to high?

Seems like there was a discussion about a year maybe it was 2 years ago about manually shifting at 6,000 that I thought you wrote you were going to try? Leaving it in drive is kind of lame especially with a floor shifter. LOL I manually shift my column shifter cars when I go to the track to get the lower QM time. And yes, I tried it both ways and manually shifting ALWAYS gave me the faster time, up to .4 faster! And my car(the Impala land barge) doesn't have the power yours does, from a 13.6 in drive to a 13.2 manually shifting at 6,000. In comparison the '64 Skylark with the 305 would be 14.2 and some change in drive and manually shifting it the times would be 14.00s. With 470 cid there could be .4 to .6 maybe more maybe less on the table if shifted higher, or it might even be faster if you tried shifting it lower? In drive never seems to achieve the fastest QM times shifting by itself that manually shifting does.

Unless you're trying to be consistent because you're practicing for bracket racing and you want to get a dial in time there's no reason to leave it in drive even if you don't want to take it to 6,000. IMO But like I wrote before, its your car and you can drive it anyway you want as long as you're enjoying it the way you want to. But I think there's more there for the taking IF you want to grab it. GL

    Thanks Derek,
I'm not that hardcore of a racer:grin:, but to me, the factory shifter is kind of lame and way too sloppy. If it had a more positive detent where it locked into the gear you were shifting it to, I might try it, but I much prefer to have it shift where I want it to with the governor. Besides, it gives me more time to watch the gauges. When I had Jim build this motor for me, I wanted a car that ran mid 11's that I could drive anywhere. I've had that for the last 4 years so I'm content.
