What are these guys using? I have been on there several times and liked the setup. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/gt...com/forum/index.php&ref=&ss=22955j29757609j41 Bob H.
Take a visit to the Suzuki Marauder Forum http://forums.delphiforums.com/mig/messages/?start=Start+Reading+>> You'll eat your words. Yes the content is there, but the the navigation and options suck!
My thoughts exactly.. I like the pages static, without popups and the "Oprah lied" loops. Anything that moves is a distraction, with the exception of that animated gif that lays tire ... that's just cool.
Now I remember why I stopped being a software engineer in 1988. I have an employee who does all that stuff. I'll see if he has any suggestions.
The Yenko site runs Powered by UBB.threads PHP Forum Software 7.5.8 for what that's worth. It works well.... www.yenko.net is the site.
stangnet looks like strange-net to me, i enjoy the your v8 site so whatever you guys decide is ok with me.
I have enjoyed the current layout - although I have had (as I have mentioned previously) difficulty in getting the site to remember me. I am also a member of the Model T Ford forum that is so annoying to use that I practically never check it anymore. Among other issues, you have to sign in and provide your password every time that you make a comment. V8 Buick is a joy in comparison.
I've been a member on several forum sites: Mercedes SL, Volvo, Chevelle, currently Corvair Forum, and, of course V8Buick. The Mercedes and Volvo sites "improved" themselves constantly and became harder to use with each interation until they both dried up and closed. Lost interest with the Chevelle site. V8Buick has consistantly been the best of the bunch and an example of how it should be done. No pop ups, full screen format, easy to read and use (with the previously mentioned exceptions), helpful, friendly, a great site. Corvair Forum is the next best I've been on. I am not familiar with the nuts and bolts of websites but while I was reading the other comments I also found myself wondering if we could take a step back to a previous, proven version. Think Windows 98 or XP vs Vista. If an older version could be improved without going to a different format, I'd think that might be the way to go.
Orangepower and jetcareers look good. I don't like the Mustang site. Have you thought about the H.A.M.B? (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forums/the-hokey-ass-message-board.5/) That site has a huge user community, so it must perform well.
I have always liked the way V8 looks compared to other forums I looked at. Some of them are so small screen they can be hard to read. I am a member on a G&L bass forum. Their format is fairly decent, although not quite as clean as the look here. www.bassesbyleo.com/forum/ If I read it right, they are powered by phpBBForum Software I hope we will end up with a full screen like we have now, but more important is a secure site that isn't too hard to navigate. Thanks to all the people making V8 possible!! :TU:
X2! It also has to be about the mods and ease of use; - if it's a dog that requires a lot of work to keep it running, then yes, look at something that will work to your comfort level and time commitments.
this is a cut/paste from the "your input needed" thread, so if you read that, no need to read it again.. :Brow: he Diesel place is a VB3.. The hamb is a Zenforo.. another customized copy.. The free software is great for small sites, but does not have the HP to deal with a big one like this.. For those who suggested it.. we cannot go back to VB3.. when you update, one of the biggest hassles is that the database is updated to work with the new code.. so when we went to vb4, the option for vb3 ended. I mean I could go back to VB3, but we would start over... usernames, posts, threads ect would be all gone.. NOT AN OPTION! The support for VB3 gone.. so sooner or later the hackers are going to find new ways in, and the site owners are going to have to update. Think MS XP... great system we all used for years, but as soon as Microsoft pulled the plug, and there are no more security fixes, we had to go away from it.. same deal with VB3. Those running it are on borrowed time. At this point in time, Mike and I have decided that we will be going to Zenforo.. Mike thinks he can get it to look more or less just like this.. there is a whole lot of customization on this board, from the original templates you get with the software.. some stuff you see, some you don't. But from what we have seen we think we can make it look like this.. Mike has a business trip to FLA here starting this weekend, so when he gets back later next week, we are going to purchase the software, take a copy of the latest database, and create a brand new V8buick.com.. attempting to make it look very much like this one, keeping the look and feel we have all grown accustom to. We will see what happens when we migrate the database copy, and get it all customized and functional.. how long that will take, I don't know, but we will be running with this site until then. Once we have it all up and running, everything working and it's tuned up and ready to go, we will take this site down, transfer the current database to the new one, and then point the DNS nameservers to that new site. It will probably take a day or two to propagate the new name, and get the lastest database installed, but that is all unknown at this point.. that's why we are doing a "dry run" while this site is up and running. I'm with you guys, I hate noting more than a message board with sidebars, and a tiny area in between that is actually the board, and I can assure you, as long as I own this deal, that will never happen here. You guys keep covering the cost, and there will never be outside advertising. I will keep you updated as we go along here, and will be looking for volunteers to find all the flaws in the new site, once that is up and running on another domain name.. Thanks for your input, and support, it's much appreciated. JW
90% of my browsing is tapatalk . Hopefully it is compatible. Other then that no " wish list " Thanks again ! DL
Sounds good. HAMB is a big board that just underwent a big update from what I hear, and from what I hear it's members are pretty picky about things. So if they are happy, it probably works quite well. :TU:
Whatever you guys feel comfortable with is fine with me. This site is really great. Keep up the good work and I will keep enjoying V8Buick. Also, I don't have suggestion since this is the only forum I ever use.
