They look absolutely ridiculous, as does the paint schemes and oversized wings. I agree with the majority---can be ok up to 17s depending on the car. Ride and safety are compromised. You don't see wheels over 17 out on the interstate traveling unless its a truck.
Thought I'd dive into this conversation. This is a topic that I've debated many times. Like many have said in this thread I'm of the view that larger wheels can and do work (visually and functionally inc safety) in situations that depend on the car, the mods made to the car and the wheel and tyre selection. I personally prefer larger wheels, but what I like is full wheel wells. On my Camaro it is tubbed and runs 17x12 rears, but I wanted side wall, so it runs a 390x40 tyre. Large rim, tall tyre (28 inches). I love the look Then on my 61 Buick, 20's on the rear, 19's on the front. These large 60-64 B Bodies were almost factory designed for large rims. How they ever got away with 15's is beyond me. This car handles, brakes and drives amazing, and looks Fn awesome in my view.
I still have the same stand point of donks, box, bubbles, high risers, sky scrapers are one of the most worthless/pointless fads out there today. This is worse then mall crawlers. ..lifted trucks with winches that never see offroad Its up thetr with rice burners and idiots that instslled extreme camber kits on their cars.. Not really a need for comment 453 I suppose, but I think it'd be cool to see this thread hit 500 replies. I personally am not a fan of bigger wheels on mostly anything from 75 on back. 17-18" is my limit. I like 15 inch Rallys myself. You can put a nice 235/60/r15 on and it just has a great stance and look in my opinion. I've stopped asking my fellow students for their opinions related to cars because "droppin some 22's on it" is one of the most common suggestions I get. Personally I'm not a fan, but it's whatever suits the owner. That and I'm a fan of the look of Goodyear Polyglass tires, so that is kind of telling of my preferences.
Bigger brakes require bigger wheels, bigger wheels have more contact with the road, more contact with the road increases traction and stopping distance, less side wall reduces/eliminates tire flex making the car more stable. Not far from where I live it is very popular for car owners to put several thousand dollars worth of "Big Rims" on cars that are essentially worthless pieces of junk, examples are old suburbans, merc. marquis, chevy caprices from the 80's and 90's etc.. It makes no sense to me but then a lot of what i do makes no sense to others. To each his own I guess. For me the answer is YES. The really big rims DO look stupid. It makes most of the cars that they are on look cartoonish and cheap, like a Hot Wheels car from the past. I also do not know how the owners of these big rim cars deal with the pot holes. Most of the big rims with low profile tire combinations I see are DESTROYED by big dents in the rims and bubbles in the tire sidewall. I am sure that translates to a nice smooth and safe ride at highway speeds. ou:
This was my 66 Corvair when I got out of the Army in 72'. We called those big (deep dish) rims then. Still like that look with a lot of tire showing. Smaller in front, and the meat in back. Have seen some newer cars that have the low profile tires and 20 rims that look good, but very few. Not on the vintage stuff, sorry!
