Public library. The bigger the better, or the headquarters in your area.
    Reference section
Ask where are the Mitchell manuals.
    Bring dimes for copy machine.
Be kind to the binding! :TU:
Read a Chilton or a Clymer manual for fun while you are there.
    They are pretty vague.
Apply a hybrid of what you read at the library, included gasket instructions, and learn here.

Removing and installing a steel intake for the first time, you really need 2 people to keep the thing under control, and for keeping the intake sealants/RTV where is should be.
I don't think it's a good idea or a neat thing to "slide" the intake "around" the top of the engine, trying to get it to sit down on the dowel pins just because it is difficult to handle. and "spot" alone.

harbor freight tools has them for cheap but they get the job done. and you will have to climb into the engine so you get a small hernia instead of a great big one. to me 300 for a shop to do it isnt that much at all. it is a pain in the a$$ and takes a long time. good luck:beers2:

You can re use your valley pan gasket. Be careful when removing itand clean it well. I would suggest using some permatex spray on copper gasket material. Also use a dab of their copper sealant (rtv) in the corners where the intake bolts to the block. I would also put a very thin line of the rtv sealant around the water jacket ports. I have reused mine several times, with no problems. Good Luck. Jim

Adrian, you must've went to a smaller type library?

I have a little rinky dink library and they had them.Sometimes the younger people working there don't even know they have them. I had to go in the basement.

    Adrian,
You should have bought the chassis manual by now. TA Performance has them for 79.00, but Frank posted an E-Bay link to a 68 Chassis manual in very nice condition for a Buy it Now price of 50.00. I would jump on that if I was you. Forget the shocks, get the manual.

    Ade,

This is a simple case of R&R.

I know you can reuse your old metal gasket, but for under 10 bucks, why would you want to?

    Now, here's the thing.

Install the intake, then wait several hours. Then retorque! The metal gasket crushes and the bolts will be loose as hell!

Then, when it is running and warming up, keep retorquing! I had mine loosen up a LOT. Those metal gaskets have to crush and then be tightened.

This is a simple fix. Drain the radiator, then just unbolt it. Make sure you bag all bolts individually or in groups in zipper baggies - and label them with a sharpie.

    Piece o' cake!

i got the manifold off...its filthy all around the bolts...taking them out literally smelled like a sewer and the valley pan was screwed.
quick question...reinstalling the valley pan do i bend the sides before hand or let the weight from the bend it?

Adrian- Good work so far:TU: Now you need to clean this (and parts you will take off in the future). Go to Home Depot (Lowes True value etc) and pick up a Rubbermaid storage tub that the manifold will be able to lay flat in. Then fo to the paint section and get 3 gallons of K-1 Kerosene, and the thick rubber gloves you would use to look in a Rhino's ass. Hit the auto parts store and grab a parts washing brush and degreaser concentrate, read the label make sure it's compatable with Kero and use the correct ratio (Kero/cleaner). Dump all together in the bin and you now have a parts washer that will last you forever. Make sure you keep it outside the house in a safe place (shed or garage would be great).:TU:
