your 3" exhaust as seen from the rear?

Please post a picture of you 70-72 buick A-body from the rear if it has 3" exhaust.

I recently installed a 3" exhaust system with x-pipe and magnaflows on my '72. I think the exhaust sticks out past the rear bumper too far and would look better if I changed it. At first I thought about adding the N25 bumper, but the theme of the car is sorta plain-jane so I think that would be out of place considering the appearance of the car.

I can't decide if I should leave it alone, cut off 1", or 2", or cut them at an angle. I know that once I cut one, there is no turning back so I would like to see a few other cars before I do anything I might regret.

    Thanks!

The pipes don't stick out beyond the bumper, but I've been considering stainless extensons to bring them out a little.

Well it sounds like you want a pretty stock lookin exhaust. My car would be of no help. My exhaust dumps before the axle. But I think an angle cut back an inch or so would look pretty nice.

Try placing black electrical tape on the end of the pipe in different locations untill you find something you like.

    Good luck.

I haven't installed my 3" exhaust yet but I ordered my tail pipes from TA because they come with the angle already cut into them unlike the GSCA tailpipes. I'd say take a band saw and cut the angle but thats my preference. Looks good no matter what you decide. :TU:

    Thanks for the replies.

These tailpipes did come from the GSCA. I would really like to see a pair of the T/A pipes with the angle cut before I do anything.

I guess I should also admit that the other reason I didn't do an N25 is because by the time I get a really nice N25 bumper, new 3" tips, make/buy N25 hangers, and modify my tailpipes, I would have a pretty large sum of money involved that could be spent on other areas that need more attention. However, the N25 exhaust sure looks cool. I would also like to take the entire exhaust off and have it ceramic coated so it would match the headers but that too will have to wait...

Gary, here's a shot of my 71 with the 3" TA tailpipes. Hope this helps, Jim.

Jim, Love your car, today a friend emailed me a picture of your car sitting in the driveway as an example of angled exhaust pipes. Your car really stands out to me.

Looks like we have similar tastes when it comes to wheels :Brow: I guess we are both just waiting until we can afford a set of those shiny wheels.... I am planning to lower my front end about an inch so the car will have a similar stance to yours.

Here's a side view. You can see why I was considering cutting them at an angle. I am not much of a risk taker and I really worry that with my luck I will cut one of them wrong.....

Gary, with the second pic I realize that's the lark of my dreams....shiney wheels :puzzled: I'm sure thay'd look sweet but something about those steelies on there now make's it quite unique.
I had the great pleasure of judging your class at the BG car show and had my eye on it for some time when Gary had up it for sale.
Thank god you picked it up and saved me from sleeping in the garage for eternity
    Very nice indeed :TU:

I was joking about the wheels. These are the most appropriate wheels for this car. However, the wife and I have been discussing buying a set of aftermarket wheels for it also just so we can swap back and forth.

I saw the car and told my wife it would be much cheaper and quicker for us to buy this car than for me to build one, especially since this is exactly what I would have built anyway!

What do you mean sleep in the garage? #1) don't most of us here on this board spend most of our time there anyway? #2) My wife doesn't force me to sleep in the garage...I do it by choice :) This Buick has cloth interior so it's pretty comfortable...

Jim! Your 71 is Rosewood isn't it?!

What I would do to have mine back. Sold it for $1800.00 in 1983.

Gary, I have to say I like it as-is, but here you go with about 1" chopped off squarely.

Gary, didn't realize that was Gary Paine's old car. Really like it! It's actually the car that inspired me to put the dogs dishes on. I also have the rallys still, that I throw on for crusin and shows.
As for the tailpipes on your car, I like them. I put the TA angle cut ones on because they look factory.
I'd keep the ones you got, and if your hell bent on the TA ones, then keep your eye on the board. Sometimes they come up for sale.
I Don't know if you'll be totally happy if you cut the ones you have because the TA ones have a section where the tailpipe runs parallel to the ground towards the bumper then turns down slightly with the angle cut in. Not sure if yours do this.

Here's one I used to have. Not too subtle when they're straight back.

Gary, while I like the look of the angled tail pipes, I think yours look great too. They are more visible but they do not stick out too far beyond the bumper like some do. It's the ones that stick way out like straws that look funny to me. Yours end just 'neath the bumper and look real good in my opinion.

a crude attempt at a cut

Here's a rough attempt at what it would look like with the pipes cut level with the ground.
