And Im calling it, the fuel line, return and vapor line all have to be replaced front to back. Theres nothing left. Evidentally, the owner ordered the brake line kit for a 79 Cordoba as they have no listin for a New Yorker. Hopefully the fuel line kit for a Cordoba is the same. Fingers crossed. So add complete fuel lines to the bill front to back.
Question............. If shop rate is 120 per hour.... just how much does the actual wrench twister get out of that 120$... The shop has other expenses.... Rent, Power,,, Insurance,,, Taxes,,,, Workmans comp AKA unemployment..... ETC ETC..... If I was to take my car to a side jobber and he told me his rate is equal to the going shop rate I'd bust him in the mouth....
So you had to have had some kind of discussion up front on what you could do for your "friend" and how you would charge? Or did the project morph into something neither of you anticipated? Reading though all of this it seems like you were getting involved in a restoration rather than just a fix; on this age of car I would think it would have "deep hole" written all over it?!? and I'm not trying to be derogatory just conveying what I'm reading and interpreting. I would hope most of what you did was as a favor and therefore just charge enough to recover some the time and usual shop resources. I would hope your able to conclude the work and walk away still friends. Gotta say, you certainly stuck with it
Honestly if the car is in the kind of shape you say, you're doing the guy a disservice by even working on it. You gotta know when to punt.. I've condemned more than one customer's car
Yeah Jason . The line to the rear on my Suburban blew out on the street in front of the house and when I was putting it in the driveway another front line blew out .
When someone brings me a car to work on. They're paying me for my experience and attention to detail. Doesn't matter if it's Plymouth horizon or a concours GS. Each one gets the same level of workmanship. You want cheap repair, go someplace else. Plenty of hack outs out there. Most of the time I bend over backwards for friends. I just pulled and engine and trans for one Corona! Lol
In my shop we let you know ahead of time your rusty POS is gona cost ya X amount of $ ..Never do the work than come up with a number and hope it ok with customer .Just did a similiar job on a 72 skylark changed all brake fuel lines bill was a little over $1000 with parts took a day and a 1/2. Had I told the customer $1800 he would have ran like hell
So here a fun fact- classic tube doesn't know they make a brake line kit for a 79 new Yorker. But they do make a kit for a 79 Cordoba. They are identical! Im gonna call classic tube Monday and order a fuel line kit for a Cordoba. The fuel, return and vapor lines are really easy to replace. Thank God this is a unibody!
Honestly, whatever he wants to pay me for what I did is fine. I just wanted to find out the market value of what I did.
There sounds to be a lot more then 10hrs into the job. That’s a lot of work wrenching with some expensive tools. Ive always based side work double of my 9-5 job. If it was time away from my family then my price is my price. I don’t negotiate with myself. The question is what you consider your time is worth to you?? If 1200$ feels comfortable to you. And you know you can sleep at night feeling that you did right by someone, I believe strongly it always comes back around to you.
Yes I would show him what all you did and I’m sure he will make it worth your while. What goes around comes around and good friends are hard to come by! Plus as you know it’s satisfying when you save an old car! Good job!
So that's what it takes to keep a Ford running. Neat, I always wondered! My dad has an awesome set of tools. He's a tv repairman...
