Greg Schmelzer What are you looking at?!

I used Havoline 20-50 Racing Formula in my old Polara. Also a daily driver. Gotta love 400+ HP daily drivers. I put 60K miles on the motor after the initial rebuild. When I tore it down for a swap into a 70 Challenger, the mains looked like they had never been installed!!

I give it :TU: :TU: .

    Just my .02 worth

well, it's not really a race motor, but....

    I use Castrol Syntec 10W-40.

Had Mobil 1 0w30 and 5w30. The 5w30 was in the motor all last year. Probably going back to the 0w30 for this season. Read somewhere that Mobil 1 is releasing a 0w20. We may try that if it really is released.

    oils

I was running castrol 10w-30 for a few years, had the heads gone thru and changed cams, and decided to try a diff. oil.
red line 10w-30 synthetic we did a back to back dyno pull and the synthetic oil made an additional 7-8 hp. and was told that 5w
and even 0w would make more power, however I opted not to do this as these weights are generally run by big time race teams who can afford constant teardowns, and rebuilds, my eng. was built by T/A perf. and has survived for the last 6 years with ZERO problems, no bearings ,nothing! just constant oil changes and a system one oil filter to check things out now and then.

Motor is a 494 stroker,308s cam, girdle, no filler, stage 2 alum heads from t/a, foot brake car, fun at the strip and occaisional street time!

Jerry, what do you think of the new Kendall GT-1 oil? (as you probably know they were bought out) no longer green color.

Ok, I'm a complete idiot concerning oil viscosities. So what you're sayin' is, a higher number like 20w50 is better for wear on an engine, but worse on HP's. A lighter oil like 0w30 is not near as perotective of engine parts, but creates less strain for the motor to run - creating more HP's.

    Crazy stuff...

Can you guys also list your RPM in the traps and oil pressure there.
Seems like a change to synthetic might be part of the recipe to get my 9.50 timeslip.
    Among other things $$$$$$$$$

Gary, i go through at 6300 & oil pressure is 75psi taken from the front of engine utilizing T/A front cover & regulator. Randy

    Randy,

If your going through the traps at 6300 rpms then you need more air in those cylinder heads. So... you have two options.... Lower the rpm or get more cylinder head!!!

    Gary,

    Mobil 1, 6700 rpm's, 75 pounds press., 9.80's @ 135 mph

I started digging for an article written by a guy in the oil industry (something like that) he did the breakdowns and contents etc of the different oils. I'll have to locate it. Anyway not sure if I'm correct on this. (Remember over 40 the mind goes:grin:) . Anyway I remember reading that zinc is what protects the bearings (short time) if the oil lubrication fails. He mentioned that high content of zinc holds better protection. Maybe someone out here can add fact or fiction to this. Anyway Mobil 1 has a low content, I never had a problem with it. I'm not in stone here using Mobil 1 and will always try a different if shows to be better. Truthfully a while back I did an oil change, I put synthetic in my 100,000 + miles Centurion and noticed immediately the RPM's at idle went up close to a 100 rpm's and the engine ran smoother. Was using prior to the switch on the Centurion, Castrol 20-40 non-synthetic. Anyway not sure on this I'll try to find the article, I believe it's in one of our NE Newsletters a few years back.

    Rick,
I remember reading an article in the GS Extra about the lack of high pressure additives in todays oils. Think it was Zinc additives. It seems the oil companys were eliminating them because it wasn't needed in the modern roller valvetrains of todays engines. Seems like that could be a problem in a high lift flat tappet valvetrain. Then there was a letter, a few issues later from Dennis Manner, saying the simple solution was to use a pint of GM EOS with every oil change. He said that is what he does with every oil change in all of his Buicks. That's good enough for me.
