yeah it keeps running when it backfires,it might start back up a couple of times then thats it , i have to wait a while then it will crank back up, then once the car cut off i was giving it gas trying to crank it then i backfired :eek2: loud). This wasn't happening whan i first got the car but the car is work in progess, it just started like i would be riding and i would feel it starting to sputter, i could be riding on the x-pressway (65-70mph), and the car would just shut off completely, not electrically just the motor,(brand new holley 600carb).

Well, from those symptoms I'm back to saying it's ignition.

Your best bet will be to find someone local who can either fix it, or help diagnose it. Have any friends or relatives who could help?

If you have a timing light handy, hook it up when the car is acting up. Watch the timing mark, is it bouncing all around, or sporatic? If so, your ignition is turning off and on, as in a bad module (very common) or bad wires leading to the module as someone suggested previously.

When the ignition system turns off, raw fuel is in the exhaust and/or in the intake. When the ignition comes back on, at the wrong time, that raw fuel gets ignited and causes a backfire. Usually this happens in the exhast system.

If you're driving along, and the motor just shuts off, you can eliminate the carb. Then that puts the ignition system as the next culprit.

Really, though, rather than chase around with my ideas, try to find someone local who can help you get it resolved once and for all, and with minimum expense. Don't throw new parts in just because someone like me thinks it may be the problem.

This doesn't mean myself and others aren't happy to help, because we are.

Did you say you put a new ignition module in after it started to act up? Or is the same one as before it started to act up?

Get a timing light, and a someone who knows how to use it if you're not familiar, and start with that.

    an update

,well i tried to move my car today it ran for about 5 minutes then started to give out, when it did shut off it was hard to crank back up. it was backfiring through the exhaust. yes i put a new module in after i started having problems. I am planning on changing my timing chain, when i get my heads redone when i change the chain, reset the timing, and change the distributor i would have changed those wires right:confused: what i am trying to ask is if i change my distributor, i will have new wires from the module right?(stupid question i know)
