i really don't know what my problem is i will crank up my car it might run for 5 minutes or 1 minute then it will just shut off completely or if i give it gas when it tries to shut off it might stay on and start backfiring (very loud). need you guys help
what is it i have a holley 600 i know to small), i changed the pick up in the distributor and it fixed my problem for about a week or so
Re: what is it Too small for a 455, but it's fine if you're running a 350 in that Skylark, for street cruising. Hey, we're a friendly bunch here too, hows 'bout signing a first name on your posts? It helps keep things on a more friendly, personal level! :TU:
what is it yeah i m running a 350 motor, how do i put my name on the bottom and how do i put a picture of my car on here? i am still looking for any answers, i am wondering if i should go ahead and buy a new distributor
Re: what is it I can help with the non-tech stuff. For your "avatar" pic. go to your user cp at the top of the main window page where it says V8 Buick, go to edit options, at the bottom of the page, put in your own avatar from your computer or web page. I think you can put your name and misc. info. in there somewhere too. I had to ask when I first signed on here too. Dee
I had a condenser once that acted up, had similar symptoms. Replaced it after scoffing at the advice, darn thing ran great after that. Warren
Condenser??? Why would that have anything to do with the car running? Do you mean the Compressor? o No:
The condensor is located in the distributor right next to the points. It should be replced each time you replace the points and you usually get them both in a kit.It looks like a small silver battery with a wire that has a fork style clip on the end that gets grounded to the distributor.
ahhh yes...that slipped my mind when replying. I've tried using the condenser/points all in one setup and it's nice not having to futz with both pieces.
condensor i have a 70 buick skylark, but i have 1 77 le sabre motor in it so it can't be the condensor right? if i put a brand new distributor on there that should kill my problem right? really need some help
If you are using an HEI ignition, the original one from that '77 motor, then you don't have a condensor. The condensor was just one idea, anyway. It could be something else, but it's very hard to tell over the internet. When it backfires, will it stay running or does it backfire and quit? Does it re-start easily?
Just a thought, but the wires that come out of the ignition module in the distributer can break inside the insulation from being flexed back and forth by the vacuum advance. The car would run and then wouldn't. I've seen 2 HEI modules that did this. o No:
If it's backfiring through the mufflers, it's usually an ignition problem. And if you're using an HEI, then I agree that it could be a bad ignition module (or wires).
distributor? i think it is backfiring more through the carb, i just changed the modulator, the pick up, and thecoil (not sure about coil), what i am wondering basically is if i can't figure it out if i go buy a new distributor do i have the chance of having the same problem?
If it's backfiring through the carb, often it's valve train related. But your symptons sound odd. Over the internet, it doesn't seem like an ignition problem then. But, tell us more- Does it keep running while backfiring? Easy to restart? Always did this, or a new thing? How about when the motor is cold? When the motor is hot?
