    Hi guys,

Now that my ‘70 GS is on the road, I want to switch mufflers. The current flowmaster 40s are too loud and have a noticeable drone. They are a short case inlet/center orientation. My system is a 2.5” TA downpipe to TA’s kit and TA tail pipes. I believe I should order the walker dynomax 17748 (inlet/center) as opposed to the 17749 (inlet/offset) and wanted to confirm before ordering. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

17749 are the ones I used for years.

I know the ‘49s were what everybody recommends, but TA said use ‘48s with their exhaust, so I did and they fit fine. I’m thinking a good installer could make either one work.

Thanks Larry and Patrick. I saw your posts in earlier threads when searching. A good installer is me, and I wouldn’t call myself good lol. I like where my tips exit currently, they just need to be adjusted so I think I’ll try the 48s since my system is entirely TA

Hey Brad! I hope you're great.

Thanks Brian! It’s far from done. Needs a lot of paint work still, but it is all one color and I couldn’t ask for more at this point. We really enjoy driving it, just needs a lot of little things attended too.

Thanks Marco. Glad to see you back! I think the VT’s have been discontinued because of valve failure. I’m going to roll with the 17748s and report back in a few weeks.

Sorry to read that Louie. It's been 10 years now and I still love and recommend these VTs...no failure.

    Good luck!

they flow good but that's the only thing good about them, yes they drone plus when you get on them they sound like you have a hole in the muffler.

17748s ordered, arrive Wednesday. My drone is the worst at light throttle (5-25 mph) so I think these will cure the problem. I will try and get a video up before end of the week comparing idle, light throttle, cruising speed, heavy throttle, etc.

Everyone has their own taste in exhaust but my cheapo pypes setup on my low comp 455 skylark sounds significantly better than the 40s on this setup. Both manifold cars with TA down pipes.

Agreed. I have the TA exhaust system and I have used both the 48s and 49s with it. The 48s are on there now and definitely work better with the pipes than the 49s did, but the 49s can be made to work.

So did the 48 work for you?

They are sitting in a box next to the car. I’ve been dealing with a fuel leak at the inlet. I’ll find time this weekend to get them on. I have video of it at idle and driving to hopefully show the difference in sound/drone. I’ll post when completed

Clipped together a short comparison video. The flowmasters sound better on the video, but the car is so much more tolerable and sounds great while cruising. I am happy with them!

It does sound better with the Walkers, IMO.

Big difference for sure....Sound better with the Walker.
Mine are the old 40 Flowmaster. Been on since 1989.
They drone just like yours. Thanks for posting.
