I recently purchased a 1963 Buick Special, it has a later model v6. I am trying to find the ID numbers so I can date the motor and find out what it came out of. Any help would be appreciated. I try to load pics. but it says they are to large. Thanks in advance Boots43

O.K. I found the numbers at the back of the engine. They are A114 and GM 3.8. I still have not found any numbers on the front of the block. Could it be behind one of the brackets for alt. or power steering pump?? Also the motor runs at about 225 degrees is that to hot? I have an aluminum radiator and electric fan. My jeep has always run at 210 degrees since I bought it. I'm really digging this car and can't wait to get my '58 painted and on the road to. Thanks again. Charlie
Yes, the partial VIN should be at the front of the engine, somewhere near the passenger side cylinder head.. But you didn't find the engine casting number at the rear of the engine?
Alright, climbed under and found 25514290 on the driverside of the block below the exhaust. Does that make it 1979 to 1982? Thanks Charlie
According to the chart in Rob's post, it could also be a 1979 (former) Turbo blok. You better look for the VIN to find out what year it's from :TU:
OK I know it's been awhile, I pulled off the alternator bracket on the passenger side of motor and no numbers. I really need to find out the year because the starter cracked the aluminum housing. I bought the same starter and no matter how I shim it, it still hangs up on the ring gear. Could the numbers be on the drivers side behind the power steering pump? I want to be sure I have the correct starter. Thanks, Charlie
I took off the power steering pump and I found a small aluminum plate/tag on the block with the numbers 1226 976393. Any help out there? Thanks Charlie
Pulled off the alum. tag and no numbers there, pulled alt. and bracket off and no numbers there either. Will jack her up and look all over for the vin. numbers. Frustrating!! Charlie

Re: v6 number location??FINALLY/almost 4 = Buick F= LeSabre Custom Sport Coupe H = Flint, Michigan factory 50565 = Flint production number (should be 6 digits) And the 1979 LeSabre Sport Coupe only came with a V6 231 Turbo engine.

I'm still thinking about this: That F should point out the year, not the model of the car the engine came from. With the newer 17 digits VIN, the F stands for model year 1985. But the engine looks older in the photos. Is it possible that this F is in fact an 8 (1978) ? Can you remove a valve cover to check the casting number for the cylinder head?
