Granted most regular tires are not made in US anymore but many americans would like to keep racing slicks made in the US. Just trying to save one segment of the industry. Sadly, if China starts making slicks at half price it will probably be all over. Goodyear was making slicks in Chile for a while but apparently had some quality issues (and some wrecks) and production went back to US production.
I just bought 4 Firestone Indy 500s. They were made in Mexico. I had to send 3 of the 4 back to Tire Rack as they were defective. (way out of round) The guy at Tire Rack said "you get what you pay for". Ha? I just wanted round tires!
