OK Buicklawyer Let the Other Cat Out of The BAG!!!! If you would not mind Dave, I would like to give you a hand at jumping this this Other Bench (OB) into overdrive.
If it will help, I will post a picture of my new toy. Maybe you can help Jim. You are better at it that I am. Dr. O
We should ask Dave H first is the Resident Senior Olds person here (almost pre Taubitz) what as an Olds person is the Holly Grail car in your book?
You are absolutely right. He and I are the real SENIOR members here. We can acutally remember the cars -- not just dream about them.
Wait a minute where were you in '66 when I was at Sanford drag strip and ....well I cannot say it for fear of letting out the cat before Dave H shows up! I will concede that when you two started the wheels were still being made out of WOOD.
Young farts Let's see, first real drag race I rode in was on Highway 95 just South of Calvert City, Kentucky in the LR seat of a brand new red and white 55 Chev Convertible against a 55 Plymouth Savoy. Chev was a power pak, 3 speed stick, and the Plymouth was also a V8 stick. That was after band practice at North Marshall County High School (I played sax, like Clinton). That was in the winter of 1955, 11 years old. Chevy spanked him bad even with 6 people inside. First drag race I drove in was in 1956 on the same road in front of the Calvert Drive in in a 55 Pontiac Chieftain against a 56 Ford wagon, 12 years old. Old ponyak ruled. Watched 2 school buses loaded with kids race side by side on that same stretch of 2 lane road in front of the drive in. Idiots. Side by side, 60-70 MPH. First drag race in my own car was in 1958 in my hand me down 47 Chev with 2 Ford Stromberg 97's (homemade manifold), and headers with flex pipe coming out behind the front wheels, no mufflers. That was against a 49 Merc. Chev jumped out in front and stayed there up to about 60 when the Merc came by. First taste of the agony of defeat. Raced a 52 Ford flathead at Atco and Vineland in New Jersey from 1960-1963 (always the lowest class, lower each year). Raced same Ford at Milan Dragway in 1965 and 1966 (ran in the 15's), and ran my B/MP Valiant there in the summer of 1967 (high 12's). Followed Dave Strickland and Grumpy Jenkins in the Old Reliable Ammon R. Smith 62 and 63 Chevvies all up and down the East Coast in summers of 1962 and 1963. The ultimate Olds has to be one of the 69 Hurst convertibles. If not, probably a 68 or 69 Hardtop. Close? Please don't say you bought the Hurst Hairy Olds...............
CALVERT CITY!! Hey Dave,Calvert City!! Why that large city is just a short distance from my neck of the woods.I live about 45 miles away in near Gracey,Ky.If you ever in the area again look me up.
Coming --the scanner slave is working on car # 29 the car Olds used to crush the competition-- Buicks included --only about 14 of the 54 factory drag cars left? Oops - the picture slave is here....here is pic 1
Note it was one of the few Olds factory drag cars without a post. Looks too pretty to have been a drag car, but it was.
Who campaigned that car ? Any "period" pictures of it in action ? Nice piece !!! Fer sure ...... :TU:
Casey none that I know of. It is the real deal. Drove 12 hrs to look at it and 12 hrs back with a contract to purchase. Figured I had wanted one for 15 years and if I did not get it now at age 60 I would drool so bad that I would mess up the paint. Note It is a F-85 442 deluxe holiday cpe. Not a cutlass. Bench seat radio delete. 4:11 rear TT diff marking. No power drain options.
