I guess my first question would be- what does the current owner believe it to be?

Just saw this thread. For what it's worth, in 2005 when I bought the Stage1 car from Japan on ebay the listing agent offered for me to buy a white GSX also. That really came at me out of left field. We went back and forth for a while about it but I decided not to do it. I don't remember anymore what the price was ($33k kind of rings a bell, not sure if that is right) but I figured that I already had my hands full shipping just one, and I already had at least half a dozen cars in storage units in the USA while I was still living in Beijing. The same person (not the ebay contact) owned both of them. I was also kind of suspicious that it wasn't really a real GSX for reasons I don't remember anymore, but there was something odd about it that was bothering me. Plus I wasn't dealing with the owner directly and didn't want to risk getting shafted for such a big amount of money in total. Fortunately it did turn out okay with the Stage1.

Yes - pilot. It's a term I have seen in the Mopar circles for years. A quote for a Hemi Cuda article:

"Govier told him that the 1970 Plymouth HEMI ‘Cuda he had was the first of its kind, the original hand-built pilot car, a car nobody even thought ever left the factory floor. It was built on August 1st, 1969, before any other HEMI ‘Cuda came off the assembly lines. It was the pilot car, which any collector can tell you means big bucks on the auto auction circuit."

Brad- I know, old thread. But being a Stage1 car pretty sure it came from Flint with Cal. Emissions. That’s where my Stage car was built (Flint) and has Cal. Emissions. Just came across this thread looking for a different one

    HAHA, yep!
I prefer that look to a detailed look (perfect)
Restored or concourse cars to me are “detailed”
They are not an accurate representation of what came out of the factory, they look nice tho.

Someone mentioned it ended up in Minnesota, was it in the Marvin “Barn” collection in Warroad? I was there last year and they have the Yellow 4 spd X once owned by Otis Chandler that was in several books, but during my visit I was told they had sold a white X they had for awhile….

Yeah Eric, I sold that one to Otis Chandler and he sold It to Ken Funk. I found out about it 10 days later
Ken bought it for half what I sold it for...Then it went to Japan

Check the trim tag to see if it says "Pilot "

It does not, but it does have a low body number which is typical of a special order car at Flint.

So not an official “ pilot car “. But as much as a gsx as the two showcars ?

I'm still undecided on that. The microfilm would come back as it being a white GS no? There is extensive circumstantial evidence it was the magazine test car. I have no doubt Buick GSX'ed it which technically makes it an X, but how do you prove it?

The current owner can likely get a V.I.N. history from the state California to help confirm what we already highly suspect.

While the cowl tag doesn't say PILOT, we are confident this Special Car Order (SCO should be stamped on the cowl tag) was ordered with the intent of creating a GSX outside of the RPO process for early promotional work including west coast press pool duty.

Labels? We could just call it what it was, Buick's "Road Test GSX".
