Not at all,I always girdle it when I stroke though.Jim Burek has done some strokers using the poston girdled pan w/o a normal girdle.

The only down side is the rods you use for a 494 are $1500 and you can get standard 455 ones for about half that. Gary

I would go with steel rods though, and they are more than the alum.

No,steel billet 4340 rods made by Crower and sold by TA and i paid almost $1500 for them which is the only downside to the stroker kit,i wonder if a chevy rod would`ve done the trick?

    Thanks

Yea i didnt got with Al.rods either cause the car is mostly street driven than 1/4 mile race and i will be putting some mileage on the motor.

    Thanks

Plans are to build a 494 shortblock to put under my top-heavy engine in my avatar. It will be pump gas still, and at least a solid cam, maybe a roller. TA Stage 1 SE heads are at GHP right now for a 3+. Current bottom end is stock, except for 20+ year old forged pistons mentioned above and ARP rod bolts.

thanks for the info the engine im thinking about building is for my street stip car, i dont put that many miles on it in a season so i think i would be fine with the aluminum rods .. thank again ...mike :beers2:

I built a 470 using stock crank, scat BBC rods, wiseco pistons, heads ported with the biggest SBC valves I could fit in the heads (217 I think). I have no idea how this will work,(looked good on paper:Do No: ) it's my 1st time doing this kind of build and I have not ran the car yet although it's ready to go. There are a couple things that I am not happy with concerning the machine shop that did the work. I wanted 10.5cr ended up with 8.96cr and my side clearance on the rods seems a little tight. Nothing I can do about the cr due to the use of custom pistons. So I added a 150 shot NOS plate system that I originaly did not want to do. I'm guessing now after reading several threads on the stroker that the 470 probably is not the way to go.
So I will run te crap out of it until it breaks:TU: and then, start over with a little more knowledge!

I too love those pics, Du! What makes them look like that, almost still-action or something?

I think side clearance is 10-12(i could be wrong) I put this together last winter...My friend that builds SBC's thinks they are too tight. But he's use to spinning to 8 grand.
The heads are iron, heavily ported, huge bowls, valves unshrouded, 69cc. Yes the seats are done, Manley valves.
I hope you are right and it works good. I probably could have saved a good bit of money by going with a T/A stroker kit. But, with my lack of knowledge, and not knowing about this board at the time of the build, this is what I ended up with.

the very minimum side clearance you should run is .018 according to most rod manufactures the most i have seen is .050. but unless you are using a dry sump stay around .020 to .025 this seems to be the best when using std or hi-volume buick pump set-up.

thanks, like I said earlier, without checking my file I'm not sure of the exact measurement.
