I was driving on the freeway in my 67 lesabre and my oil light came on, at that same moment the engine emitted a strange noise like bad timing but way more muffled, not as "pingy" but then it went away.

Not sure what to think of this?

Did it momentarily lose power, or surge when you heard the sound? If there was a momentary timing "hiccup", then the oil pressure would momentarily drop and (possibly) that could account for the light coming on at the same time.
How does the overall power feel? Does it normally pull strongly and cruise smoothly?

it didnt loose power and it lasted for a bout 5-7 seconds. Im not sure what you mean by "surge" sorry.

overall it feels solid. Although i noticed that my timing sounds as if its pinging from time to time and when i shut off the car its still jumping.

I think your timing chain is loose and the chain may have skipped a gear. Check for play in the timing set by turning the engine over via bolt on harmonic balancer and having a freind watch for delay at the dist rotor with cap removed.

how exactly do you track this? as i turn and the dist. passes TDC the #1 piston should be TDC?

Take off your distributor cap and put a wrench on your crank bolt. Rotate the crank back and forth, then watch the rotor. That will let you judge how much timing chain slack you have. The fact you lost oil pressure is not good. When you loose pressure, your valve-train will usually get noisy(er) :Smarty:

so when i turn the crank it the rotator should move right with it correct?

how do i hook up an oil pressure gauge? i'd love to have one in there just to monitor things.

where does the sending unit plug into?

Rotor should turn with the crank, you are correct.

It will replace the sending unit on the engine block just above the oil filter where the oil light presently is. You can mount the gauge inside wherever you like, run the line out through the fire wall (make sure you install a rubber gromet in the hole) out to the engine. Most gauge kits (auto meter etc.) come with everything you need including instructions.

Take the stock oil light unit and oil psi gauge sending unit both to a hardware store if you wanted to keep both hooked up. Get a T and some other fittings.

Just find one of them old guys and tell him what you want to do.
put both of them two into one hole. He will get ya the right stuff.

Just don't try that with a buddy and some strange girl in a drug store.
    They won't help ya.

Where on the block is the sending unit? ive really never seen it, or noticed it. I'd like to hook it up this weekend. Do i have to drain the oil?

Near the front of the motor. opposite side from the fuel pump. A few rags will catch the oil that dribbles out.

ok i think ive seen it. its about 2in long i think. Do the oil gauges from kragens or any other pars stroe come with the line and sending unit?

or is it a line from the "t" to the gauge?

and whats the pressure it should be at when working properly for a 67 5.6L 340cui?

You shoull get about 15-25 at idle when warmed up, and about 50 psi at 4000 rpm. If you rev to 5000 then at least 55 psi.

    cool thanks.

Do the gauge kits supply the hose?
