I can't look at that car without hearing in my mind's backgroud the open header cackle of a Stage 2 car and the sound of the red car those guys brought to the Nats a few years ago--wound out to like 8 grand through the traps. Badass for sure.

One of my favorite GS's!! That car has a great history. Engineering car for the Stage 2 program. A magazine test car that Hot Cars got to go 12.80 at 109 with the addition of headers and slicks, then sold to Jones & Benisek. Its been a race car ever since.

Has this car ever been registered or is it still on the MSO from Buick?

Well . . . I wouldn't really say that. Famous racer; yes. Great history; yes.

Drag cars do not bring a lot of money. I suspect less than 100K is more like it. A lot of 60s drag cars do not bid beyond 50-60K. But anything is possible if two people with money pursue it.

Maybe you're not aware of the full story on this car and Guy's car then.

Thats true Jim, but i was watching when a certain LS6 Chevelle went thru BJ and brought seven figures. It is all about the buyers. I still stand by that number but could see it bringing a lower bid mostly because of the perception(wrongly) that our cars don't measure up. I had Terry's SunCoupe out yesterday and got it hand washed. The fellow had no idea what he was looking at. But he did a great job. He called it old school and how cool the cars froom the 80's were:eek: Then he asked what it was worth like 85k:idea2: Maybe were asking too little:dollar:

I can assure you I do. Doug Jones would be able to clear up when exactly the car received the Stage II equipment. My best guess would be late '71, early '72, as they were still class racing as a Stage 1 then. The hood did come off of the Stage II prototype car, as per Denny Manner, but from what I've gathered, the Stage II heads were purchased through a dealer.

    "Engineering car"- I think not.

That LS6 was Ray Allen's old car. It sold again later for a lot less. LS6 cars have a much larger following.

I will bet you a Diet Coke that the final number does not reach 6 figures.

"1970 Chevelle LS6 convertible--a former NHRA championship-winning Super Stock drag car.
The eyebrows of the Chevrolet faithful were raised in unison when the car sold for an unheard-of $1.2 million at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale in 2006. Then, just over three years later, you could almost hear a collective "I told you so," as the car changed hands at RM's Icons of Speed and Style auction in Los Angeles, this time for $264,000."

After being used a journalist test car, Buick used it as a mule car for the Stage 2 program. After that, Jones & Benisek acquired it from Buick. So it was a Stage 2 car long before it became the J&B car

I will admit defeat if I'm wrong, but I think the Jones and Benesik car did not have any Stage II equipment on it until they put it on.

Here's the big question: Is Denny Manner's "Test Mule" car (for the Stage II program) the same car as the Jones and Benesik car? Denny Manner and Doug Jones would be able to answer that for sure. I suspect not.

I would really like to see some documentation.

I believe Buick sold it at auction as a "demo" with all of its federally certified factory Stage 1 equipment

So then that's probably the Road Test Magazine and Motorcade Magazine test car too......as a Stage 1, it did 14.2 @101 for Road Test, and 13.6 @ 103.9 for Motorcade. It was shown in the magazines as a black bench seat, base interior 4 speed.

I'll be damned, it was the pictures in those articles that made me look so hard for a non vinyl top car....

That definitely makes total sense, since Jones/Benesik raced it as a stocker. I'm still skeptical about if It actually had any Stage II equipment on it before it was sold. I know it was a magazine test car. I read that article, but I do not have a copy. IIRC, the magazine tests were all with Stage 1 equipment, correct?

I'm pretty sure that's where all the confusion is.

If it did have Stage II equipment on it prior to Jones/Benesik, there would be some sort of factory documents stating that. I haven't ever seen any, nor heard of any surfacing. Denny Manner would know for sure.

I DO know that Dave Knutsen wrote an article on the Stage II engine program, http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/Stage2.htm, stating that two factory Stage II cars were produced but neither of them were the Reynolds car, or Jones/Benesik car. He apparently has documentation to back that up. I suspect one is engineering car #4085 (white GSX), but the other is unknown.

I'm not ready to eat crow yet . . .

Yes, the Jones/Benesik car was a test car in a magazine/magazines with Stage 1 equipment. That is most certainly true. But, did it have Stage II equipment on it before Doug Jones and Dave Benesik got a hold of it?
