    Standard "narrow band" O2 sensors operate between 0 and 1 volts, and are only capable of accurately measuring a stoichiometric air/fuel ratio (e.g. 14.7:1). A richer or leaner condition results in an abrupt voltage change (see Fig 1.) and thus is only useful for qualitative determination. Modern automobiles use this "switch" like sensing at idle and part throttle to make small compensations in fuel delivery to keep the air/fuel ratio near 14.7:1.

    Exactly. Just a more accurate way to see what's up with the air/fuel mixture than trying to read plugs all the time.

    Tony, it's Tony but Anthony will be fine not to confuse each other! I meant it sounded like you have a 2-speed in that Riv now but they never had the 300 did they? If you did have a 300 then that would be hurting that weight big time. I am more accustomed to the '65's.
    The mixed carbs on the intake confused me as the stock dual quad has terrible distribution to start with and having 2 different sized carbs would exasperate the situation even further wouldn't it? Gessler has it off 30% from least to most flow, the stock dual quad, not good at all. Then mix carbs and who knows what each cylinder is getting, could be way unbalanced for flow and that is the idea of the duals, better distribution of the fuel for more power/torque. The EELCO looked quite good against the golden intake but you said you got an Edelbrock so you are set but run the same size carbs! I'm all for experimentation but...?
    If you do have a 2-speed and are going to a 400 with the smaller converter then you will pick up there a good bit I would think. First gear would go from a 5.50 to an 8.9 plus the difference in torque multiplication, big difference again, only positive, counting the tire diference. Really you have more to get from the present set-up and after a fresh motor, well.....cool! Good Luck Tony, Anthony!

    Tony Y, If you havent already, fab up a '' cold air'' pkg. for your car. It will be well worth the effort and money. Buick says that mod alone is worth 8% of the total hp out put. I have done this with all my cars and it really works. Just make sure the inlet hoses are big enough, in fact make the inlets or inlet as big as possible............ naw,,,,,,I wont say I told you so,,,,,,he he .

    Do you mean one of them there "Redneck Ram Air" systems-I believe Walt has one on one of his GS'
    I will run the car w/o the restriction of the air cleaner.

    Anthony (I knew there was something I liked about you)- I am currently running a ST 400 3 speed Trans (original)

    Tires will be here on 6/6 I will have them mounted and balanced on the weekend. I will play around with my G-tech just to see if it is accurate and how much time I drop. :TU:

    Nice air cleaner Doc!:TU: That's a real clean setup there...I'd copy it it I could do it without cutting a hole in my firewall. My first ram-air was true redneck....4" dryer duct from the stock 2x4 air cleaner to the headlight openings. Now I have some black emissions ducting that looks a little better.

    Tony, my blue 66 has a race weight of 3910 with me and 1/2 tank of gas. It's not a lightweight either! In theory, you should only be 4 tenths slower than me if you had my powertrain.....and No, you can't have it:bla:

    Here are some results from some long-ago testing I've done:
    Single 4bbl vs dual quads:
    With a pair of 500cfm comp-series AFB's, I've run 13.60's. With a 66 750 Q-jet, I've run a 13.41. I won't say those tests are conclusive until I do more testing with other carbs and tuning. There are other carbs I can try, ranging from some stock 2x4 carbs, 2x4 750 AFB's, a 750 Holly dp, and a 800cfm Q-jet.

    Air cleaners:
    The stock Q-jet air cleaner cost me 6 tenths over an open element air cleaner!!! It was even a new Fram element. The difference was VERY noticeable on the street.
    The 2x4 air cleaner worked okay for me, with the 'ram-air' ducting connected to the snorkels. I didn't pick up anything with the open Ford 427 air cleaner.

    Trans:
    ST400 junkyard trans with shift kit and GS (same as ST300) converter. 2000/3000 stall speed. Shifts at 5000 rpm. Just got a V6 converter that should help....if it'll hook up!
    Rear: 4.11 gears, 275/60-15's. about 5500 @ 101mph+ in the traps....and still pulling:grin:
    60 ft times are generally in the 1.9 range.

    Timing: I've run 30-32, never tried more. might be worth a try.

    I like the O2 sensor idea! I'm nervous about trying new carbs and not knowing wether I'm too lean and on the verge of a meltdown. :confused:

    I found a 'back-seat' video-cam clip of my 13.41 run! I didn't realize it spun so much off the line.....that's gotta be a few tenths lost there! Hate to admit that was more than a few years ago....1995. Dunno if If raced it since:Dou: I'm due for some 1/4 mile assaults. waaaay due!

    Walt that's some interesting #'s. I am a whols second off what you are getting but I do have a different set up
    3.23 gears is the first big difference. I just got the new MT drag radials put on yesterday 235/60/15 alittle smaller and that should help some. Norbs is sending my converter (I just purchased from him) to Jim Wiese to get reconditioned. The B262 is on it's way from WA so when I have them both I will head over to TT's shop for some upgrades. First I have to take the trans over to my tranny guy and have him take a look at it. Don't want to put a POS in and have to take it out. All this work on the Rivi is making the Skylark very lonley.:grin:

    Doc, that is cool! Is that the only place it gets air, one opening? If only one then another would be much better as that snorkel is a bit small, what are it's specs, the snorkel specs, such as 4" x 2.5"?
    Walt a set of DR's and you may have gotten into the 12's and this shows what gears can do. No wasted power there at 5500 through the traps as long as you aren't driving it a lot on the street, guys I love this and Tony you have a lot yet to drop off so hang in there! Anthony.

    Yep, 66 that is the only opening but it is bigger than the 2 openings on a dq air cleaner combined. It doesnt show in the picture but the snorkel is the same depth as the housing itsself. Enough sq. in. to work good.
    I did my 64 Riv basicly the same way and it works real good.

    Yaccy, I really enjoyed the conversation the other night, it is good to have good friends.
