I am just hoping the recent restamp debacle wont hurt the price of your distributor, like the reproduction 70 GS grille did to the NOS ones. I am not impressed that anyone would do a restamping thing to make profit. It wont be long after this auction for the trash to start selling their restamps if this makes good money..Shame on those people. In my opinion, thats immoral..Good Luck I hope you get good coin,I'll be watching this auction.

Honestly, if someone restamps a carb, distributor or any part, for that matter and makes the buyer aware of it before any transaction takes place, how do morals become an issue?

I wouldn't think morals would be an issue the first go round if it is stated that the part is restamped. But the next time around is where the problem lies I think, depending of course on the sincerity and honesty of the current seller.:)

Well said. It's the second time around. Now everything can be #'s match. Stamping blocks can't be far behind.:(

Why would anyone do this except to cash in down the road. There really isn't any other reason.:dollar:

Considering the simple fact that supply and demand have launched such a huge climb in price for what should be a 60.00 part at your local NAPA, I don't see restamping as a bad alternative for the regular Joe trying to have a nicely restored car. I remember when GS guys shared parts and experience with each other, and didn't say, "sure you can have it, if you can outbid everyone in the country." Not that there's anything wrong with making money to pay for your projects, but it isn't fair to badmouth the little guy who can't outbid everyone in the country. That said, it IS dishonest to deceive the buyer of your part, or finished car, and not disclose that the carb and distributor are restamps. I would also venture a guess that engine restamping of GS engines and transmissions has been going on, unnoticed for a long time. I think past the engine, trans and rear, numbers matching and date coding of normal replacement parts is for the obsessive-compulsive types (myself sometimes included). Dan

Well Said Dan. I am part of the obsessive compulsive group as well and have help contribute to the part's craze as of late and am not proud of it. I am looking at other alternatives to $5000 carbs as I am planning on keeping the cars I have now and want them to look correct. Good luck with the auction!!:beers2:

E bay just yanked my listing. They didn't like the link to my web site. I didn't know.
I will relist the distributor soon.

There still is no reason to do this except to cash in down the road. Even if I wanted one for my car to make it complete for my own personal enjoyment I still know that it is not real, it is a re-stamp.

So if you can't fool yourself who else is there. That's right, the next guy.

So,What you are saying is that if you paid $59,000 for a Stage 1 car, all numbers matching car only to find out that not only the distributor, but also the carb was restamped that was on a GS 350 car originally, you'd be pleasantly pleased??I can't get over the fact that last year when the retagging issue was made people thought this was one of the biggest sins but they accept this dishonest, immorral practice..Man,we have came down hill a long way now. Lets all restamp all our parts and screw the 2nd guy that buys our parts. Credibility is what we are supposed to be about. Let me wager a bet ...Out of all the restamps that were/are being made how many do you think will be honestly disclosed by the purchaser? I say none..

The V8Buick site cannot win on issues like this. If the thread is deleted those that want the distribs will be upset and if the thread is not others will be upset.

I realize that if they want it they will find it somewhere but it shouldn't be here. If the re-stamp seekers will be angry then so be it.

In the world of Corvette NCRS "Bloomington Gold" judging, which by the way is way MORE stringent that our concours BPG judging, the judges cannot tell restamps from original stamps anymore. The Corvette "Rembrants" have gotten that good. So a restamped Corvette block is the judged the same as if it were original to the car.

In my opinion, thats going to be us in 15 years

    I agree...

Who really checks carb, dist, block stamps at car shows? So why is it necessary. If you know its a restamp, then what is the satisfaction of having it? It is no more correct than a part with the wrong stamp, unless someone is trying to fool someone else.

I don't have a Stage 1 and sometimes I am glad because the day will soon come when there will be more "numbers matching" Stage 1 cars on the road than were ever Built by Buick :( It will only hurt the value of the "real" cars with "legitimate" factory parts.

When I was looking for a '68 GS Convertible I wanted (and found) one with almost all of the original parts and I paid a little extra for my GS for that reason. I would have to look very cautiously if I were to drop big coin on a "numbers correct" Stage 1 now days :Dou:

OK guy's, take it outside! This is my post to let you know an original part is available, not debate ethics.
I have relisted my distributor, item 270114564781.
By the way, my GSX is a clone, or recreation, what ever you want to call it and I'm not ashamed of admitting it. I built it out of spare parts I had from my other projects so I didn't have to worry about racing / hurting an original car.
I do understand the concern with the issue of restamping and believe the first person buying the item or building the car would be honest, it's the second, third, or forth person I would worry about trying to pass it off as original then claim they didn't know if called out.

I guess I should ask if you guys are OK with reproduction sheetmetal? Repro lenses? Repro emblems? What about GSX and Stage 1 "clones?" All of the above are really fakes. Where would you like to draw the line? You seem to be pretty angry about all of this. I do hope this restamping of carbs and distributors decreases the value of the originals. Then I will buy an original at a reasonable price, and put the fake on the shelf.

Where does the madness end? A car is only "original" once, period. It disturbs me that the muscle cars that we love and enjoy are becoming investment tools. it is a shame that a carb is $5000, but money makes the world go around. We should not judge others but each person enjoy the hobby in his or her own way. I have done the trailer queen duty and no more. If I can't drive it like rental, I won't build it. That said, as long as there is a way for a buck to be made on used or repro parts, a buck will be made. If a guy can turn a buck honestly he should.
    Thanks, Allen
