Put on your thinking caps guys -

What, if any, parts come to mind as the most rare and valuable in your experience? I'm talking about the stuff that HAS to be in place to authenticate a muscle car, the "bits and pieces" stuff that is harder to find than hen's teeth. The engine or trans or whatever that is SO rare it would start you on an IMMEDIATE cloning project if it were yours.

Lots of folks from different car tribes here - we might find out that those 'ol junk parts in the shed are valuable to somebody else.

So fire away - what would be the coolest thing you could imagine finding?

Back in the late '80's, I was on a junkyard scavenger hunt in northern Kentucky. Basically a Mopar only outfit. I ended up talking the owner out of a set of NOS Max-Wedge exhaust manifolds. These things had obviously never been bolted on an engine. He had no idea how he even ended up with them. I held onto them for 2 or 3 years, and then put them up for stupid money at Mopar Nationals. Sold real quick. Have never seen as nice of a set since then.

My uncle GAVE AWAY a COMPLETE NOS W-27 Olds aluminum rear end about 10 years ago to a buddy of his. This was a complete rear axle. 5.00 gear. :Dou:

Seems like any original 69 1/2 lift-off hood RR or Bee air cleaners go for some pretty good dough. Also, if you can find an ORIGINAL lift off hood, itself.

7040255 QJets for 70 W-31's have also gotten stupid lately. Anyone that has one, I'll buy it/them. :beer

427 Ford blocks that haven't been blown up seem to command some righteous bucks. Just ask Brian ....

1970 F85 door panels. If you have access to any of those, in any color, I'll buy those too !! Unique to an F85.

I'd love to find the front nose, and rear wing for that matter, to a 1969 Dodge Daytona.

These were in 1970 called the Plymouth Superbird. '69 Daytonas are much rarer. Try and find one for sale. I'm sure somebody will here and post it just to rub my nose in it.

We have a set of 413 LONG RAM manifolds from a Chrysler letter car in the basement. They are the ones that have the passenger side bank of cylinders fed from a carb that sites over the drivers side inner fender and vise-versa for the other side. Not sure what we'll do with them:Do No: Mabey a street rod in our "golden years" Would look real cool with an AFB stickin' out each side of the hood of a 32 Plymouth 5 window coupe:TU: Or perhaps a 500ci LONG RAM WEDGE with throttle body injectors in a D600 4 door ramp truck for hauling to the races:Brow:

    Mopar stuff

I had a cast-iron intake for a 383ci 343hp Mopar about 35 years ago and sold it for $35.00. It was a factory inline 2-4bbls setup. about 3 years ago a complete shaker hood with bubble and base went for about $4,500, 2years ago it was between 5 and 6 thou, and I talked to a fellow and he said the real71 cuda hoods and bases are pushing $10,000. A pair of uncut Max-wedge heads complete are near $3,500. Dana Mopar rearends are near $1,500. I totally supply and demand. Thanks Jim

    Hey Mike,

I just sold a set of those long rams to a guy out in Washington State. Came off a 1962 letter car. I found that if you have the rams, all of the linkage pieces, both Carter carbs, air cleaners, etc.. it'll go for big BIG bucks. The manifolds themselves are currently $500 in change.
Mine were going to go on a 413 wedge in a 1964 Fury Super Stock clone... Until we found a 426 max wedge stage III :Brow:

    Good luck on your project!!!

Years ago I had a 1966 Charger 383 4 speed that we foung a 383-2X4bbl cast iron intake and put it on with a couple AFB's later when we switched to a 440 we were able to trade a guy for a 413 2X4bbl inline intake and put that on. We couldn't find any air cleaners that would fit the smaller size of the AFB so we got some OVAL air cleaners from a Wisconsin V-4 industrial endine and they fit PERFECT and looked factory. We had guys asking to buy them all the time so I guess they looked like the original air cleaners:Do No:

STAGE III Lost Experimental 455-4 Bolt Main Block.

    Yep

    Well,
I can definitely relate to many of these items from having so many different toys over the years.
Had a 413 dual quad car so I know about those cross rams, had the 69 Hurst for the "D" heads info, bought a complete 67 GTO 4:11 rear -end (drum to drum) for $50 bucks from the grass cutters who hauled it out of the original owners back yard who I bought the goat from. That one was rare too a FACTORY 3 on the tree 67 GTO.
My favorite one Jim mentiioned though.
It has been said over the years I am able to find about anything I put my mind to and one day I was faced with the passenger side tri-shield 70 model mirror for my Stage 1 4 speed car (and WHATTA car it was! nicest I've ever owned).
I finally tracked one of the mirrors down for $4oo bucks NOS and the guy (SERIOUSLY) had it "stored" in his underwear drawer:puzzled: Yep, I said underwear:rolleyes:

And Let that be a lesson to anyone trying to hide any parts I need ha ha:Brow:

    Rare parts-big bucks

    :puzzled:

Chrysler long Ram intake manifolds can be found, the carbs and special exhaust manifolds are rare.

Olds w-31 and W-30 carbs are scarce and expensive. Ditto for distributors. Bought a wrecked 72 W-30 10 years ago just to get the 1112034 distributor.

Have to say though the rarest part I have ever seen were a pair of factory aluminum headers (manifolds)for a 421 Pontiac Superduty. Saw them at the Portland Oregon Swap Meet April 2002 for $2100. They were mint.

I have heard of people paying $250.00 for an NOS rad cap.

How about $1000 for an NOS Goodyear Polysteel for a 72 Hurst
    Olds.

The tops might be $9000 for the manifold and carbs for a 66 Shelby GT350. Thats for the webbers.

    Mr Norm car

I've got a TRI-POWER air cleaner for a Mr. Norm's '70 Demon GSS 340 6-Pack car. When he built these cars he got the intake from Mopar and the carbs from GM:eek2: as the carbs were cheaper from them:Dou: I'm uncertain where the air cleaners came from.

oem6pak: Nice Camaro reference... How about a NOS cross ram (for the DZ302) with carbs and cowl induction baseplate/ air cleaner assembly? I have seen the intake alone sell for a couple of grand... NEVER seen a complete set-up...
Complete Ram Air V (pontiac) engine?

    Speaking of Mopars........

How about a set of the 1969 Kelsey-Hayes "recall" rims? These were one piece cast aluminum with a pop-in outer trim ring. They were recalled because it was found that either (A) the wheel lugs kept loosening by themselves, or (B) the entire cast center would break out of the rim! A complete set including trim rings and special lug nuts trades in the $3500-$4000 range. They were replaced with similar appearing rims except the outer trim ring was replaced and they just polished the outer rim of the wheel instead. Personally, I think they are ugly rims.

    Non-Mopar: 1965 Malibu SS396. I can't wait to see Scott Pennington's in person!

Another rarity would be any 1957 Pontiac with Rochester fuel injection. Saw a 1957 Safari 2 door wagon back in 1977 with this option. Amazing.
