When did the 3.2 V6 come out? I'm looking into a 1998 Pontiac for my daughters first car. I thought I remembering see 3.2 on the the engine but see the only I saw for that year and car was a 3.1 as far as a V6 goes. AL.
Dont believe they made a 3.2, i know they made 3.1, 3.4 and 3.8 v6 motors but i dont think a 3.2. what kinda pontiac is it?
Al, my knowledge on the subject is far from vast, but I, too, have never heard of the 3.2 V6. Like Shaun, I know they made a 3.1, 3.4 and a 3.8, but never heard of the 3.2. I am, however, proven wrong regularly, so let us know if this is another one of those cases. o No:
There is also a 3.3 V6... mid to late 80's right after they got rid of the G body. Looks just like a 3.8 but with a different intake. I've never heard of a 3.2 either though o No: 2.8, 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.8... and that's all I know about...lol.
I believe the 3.3L V6 you are refering to is based on the old 3.0L Buick design, Pontiac used the 3.3L engine in the Grand Am up until 1998. When the Grand Am body changed in 1999 Pontiac started using the 3400 V6 (3.4L Chevy).
I don't know this to be fact, but didn't Olds and Cadillac use a 3.2 liter. Pontiac didn't in 1998. A 2.2 liter 4 cylinder perhaps, but definately not a 3.2 V6.
I'm not sure about the availability of the 3.3, but the Grand am for yrs. 92-98 have a 3.1 v6 optional, and the 2.3l quad4. (my 96 GT has the 3.1)... 3.4's started in '99 when they redesigned the front end and made the Ram AIr an option. 2.2 is an "Ecotech" non quad engine based off of the 2.2 cavalier engine used throughout the 90's.... Pontiac started using that in 99 as well. 94-98's used the 2.3 quad4, and pre 92's used the "iron Duke" 2.5l.... unsure about 92&93 years. I do think the quad 4 was available in earlier years as an option.
The same thing like a Riveria, avator or a convertable........ ou: (Words that are used on this board very often)
What's the joke.... You can never tell a pontiac by its back end.... Cause you never see it. Buicks are readily identified by their rear ends.
GM axed the 3.3 in the early 90's. It was a sibling to the 3800 and the 3.0. I'm not sure what year they stopped using it, but there never were any OBD-II 3.3s, so sometime before '96. I'm thinking '93 or '94. After that, they just used the 3100.
Funny to see that your are getting more and more used to use metric CC's instead of CI's in engine displacements :TU:
Yep... Just seen a post on another board about a 93 with the 3.3, so they must've axed it for the 95's Did we ever hear what year the Grand AM in question was????
Ponitac Help Needed Thanks Guys!! I got the straight scoop now. Thanks to your help I've found it is a 3.1. I will be looking for a 3.1 V6 for a Gran Am. The car in in descent shape for a 148,000 mile on it. The engine in it is locked up and heard this is a common problem on this power plant. AL.
It locked up? Err... The real common problems with these engines are intake gaskets and head gaskets. Someone must have let it sit after it was leaking water.
Actually, I've heard the problem with the 3.1's are the Camshaft breaking every 80K or so. I haven't had any problems with the intake on mine at 120K(but the engine was rebuilt at 80K though p ). Wasn't that supposed to be the 3.8's problem?? I personally know of atleast 6 people (7 counting mine) with the cam problem in 3.1's ranging from 93-98.... Mom and wife's friend both have 3.4's, waiting till they hit 80K to see if GM fixed it or not  The transmissions go out around 125K though, I'm already having probs with the lockup chattering. If I were you, I'd try to find a 3.4 and trans out of a newer Grand AM.... Basically a driect drop in and you don't have to change the wireing since they are basically the same engine (if your's is an SFI setup... MPFI's might be different). But I'd definatley be eyeballing that trans if you're planning on picking up the car!! Good Luck, I really like mine.. Cheap, nice looking, sporty feel... Just wish it had bigger B@!!s. Will corner great though
Ponitac Help Needed MadCat455, are you sure the 3.4 is a direct bolt in for a 3.1? I may have a lead on a 3.4 but did not know if it would work. AL.
The 3100 and the 3400 are identical externally. you may have to change sensors and such, unless you get an engine out of the same year and model car. The old 3.1 engine is different from the 3100, and the DOHC 3.4 is a different animal altogether. But it's got bucksnort for a little six.
Check out this site... Guy has a list of exactly what you need in order to do it. I read it over.. Seems pretty straight forward, have to switch some things because of sensor connection differences, and have to reuse the 3.1's fuel system & upper intake (if I read it correctly). But nothing really out of the way of doing a 3.1 to 3.1 swap.... Said that it is a "bolt In"... just have to get er wired...lol. Link: http://www.3400swap.com/
Ponitac Help Needed Thanks again guys!! BTW Jeff I got your e-mail, I appreciate your follow up! :beer :TU: AL
