I`m looking to replace my TA 510 hydraulic cam in my 494ci with a solid,im leaning torwards TA 304S or TA 294-98F,heads are TA Stage 2 SE will be doin a Gessler Level 3 and i do have the big 2.26 intake valves in these heads rather than the 2.14 and SPX Intake and AED 1000 HP carb,10.5.1 compression in a stick car 3.73 gears,id like to get some input on what cam you recommend and why?

    Thanks

I like the looks of them both with your Stage 2 level 3 plan. Greg told me my TA stage 1 SE level 3's would be fine with the 308S, so I wouldn't be at all afraid of the 304S straight pattern w/108 LC with your better exhaust ports, especially considering your extra displacement and the 5 speed manual trans.

I like the 304S as well the only thing that concerns me alittile about the 304 is the duration and 108* and if the car will be able to have street msnners?

I ran the 308S in my Wildcat with a variable pitch converter, manual v-body 400 and absolutely loved it. Power brakes were marginal, but neutral and a blip of the throttle and I had 2-3 good power assisted pumps of the pedal. I run the 294-04F now with a bit more split between intake and exhaust, but it's behaving the same as far as street manners go. Your displacement being more than my 462 means the cam will be a bit more tame than what I'm used to as well.

Others will chime in for sure.

What are you trying to accomplish?

My 510 cam makes 7psi vacum at idle............I can't see the 304s being much worse......

This is the cam I was seriously thinking about, but with the increase in rpm and an ungirdled block, I didn't want to push it more than I am.

I`m not looking to accomplish anything in particular im just looking to get ideas.

    Thanks

My 510 makes about 8-9 at idle i would`nt think the 304S would be making any more or less,im not worried about brakes i have manual brakes and going to Hydroboost this winter.

    Thanks

George, do the 304S unless someone comes right out and tells you not to.

Both my 308S and 294-04 were/are as tame as can be on the street just cruising around. You have even more advantage with your transmission's lower gears. My car drives around like a low powered grocery-getter unless I hit high stall and mash the pedal...then all Hell breaks loose.

The only drawback is that it doesn't sound like a grocery-getter, so say goodbye to any potential sleeper status you might have wished for.

Oh, by the way...fuel economy sucks. Go figure.

304S sounds good to me too,not looking for grocery sleeper the 510 definately doesnt sound like one.

    Thanks

When comparing hyd to solid cams a hyd is about 8 degrees more duration than the solid so if you want a bigger cam I'd run the 304.With higher lift cams I want a solids stability at the higher rpm's
    I've run a 10to1 642 with a 510 and Rhodes lifters and a 10to1 464 with a
294-98 of the 2 I like the 294-98 better both these were with ported irons.I ran the 294-98 464 with ported stg2 SE but I didn't get much seat time and blew the motor.
My next pumpgas 464 stg2 SE will have a solid about the same as the 304 but I might spread it to 110 lsa still thinking on this one.I want to try a single pattern with the stg2's.

Jamie, what would be the advantage with getting the 304S with the 110 rather than 108?can you order it with the 110?

First off I'm no cam guru the 2 cams before were both on a 110 and enjoyed shredding tires with them.I've never used a 108.With a cam this size 268 I might be just hoping the 110 would clam it just enough(alittle less overlap)
So I was just thinking about it,I can't say for sure it will do what I'm after but I might try it.The hyd roller would do what I'm after but to much $ for me at this time.Call TA I like to talk cams with them.
My new cam (got a good deal) 248-248 solid on a 114 570 lift so I'll see how this one works on a re-ring+bearing std 455 10to1 stg2.

I guess I don't know if you're looking for more performance, more streetability or ? What are your track times now?

That is such a great question! I spent some silly money on earlier cars before I learned to ask myself that. :Dou:

I built a pump gas STG 2 race motor with the 304S here a few years ago.

    Specs
Girdled SRP shortblock with crower rods, stock crank 464 ci
    10.8 compression
off the shelf 304S, installed at 104*
    SPX
    1050 Dominator
STG 2 SE heads, flowing 330/245 at .550

    Here's the performance..

George, if you're ever in the Detroit area when the pavement is dry here, I'd be glad to meet you and take you for a drive. I've been envious of your '67 and would like you to do the same for me someday.

Best of both i guess,i dont go to track often i screw around with my buddies we drive alot and go at it on the highway lolol, the car is not set up for 1/4 mile(stiff suspension)more for handling but best time i did on the quarter with street tires was 12.50@119 car weighs 3900 with me in it,****ty 60 foot times and bad reaction time too,lol i need street slicks to launch it or esle she spins throught the gears, the dyno sheets best was 632 hp @5800 and 622 ft.lbs of tq @ 4700 but for some reason you always want more, she holds her own amongst my friends 555 bbc and 500 bbm, maybe for now i`ll just do the heads and see how she responds.

Jim thank you for the dyno sheet and info greatly appreciated!

Devon i appreciate it man,and anytime you come down to NYC you`re more than welcome to take a ride in the black widow!
