NHRA record holding 67 GTX in the 71 season?

A friend of mine has a 67 GTX that he's had for years.
He got the car somewhere in Ohio.
It has decals on the quarter glass that say 1971 NHRA Class Record Holder.
It was originally a burgandy car.

Does anyone know a way to trace this cars racing history? I'm not sure what class it was raced in?

    Thanks

National Dragster...but you'll have to know engine/trans, and then take chance on the owner's name.

A buddy gave me a book "How fast were they?" that lists road test times and NHRA and AHRA national event winners (driver and car names) from back in the day up to 1974. It's pretty complete and I did not see a 67 GTX listed as winning a natitional event back in 1971 but that's not to say that car is not a record holder.

It does show Dave Benisek's 72 GS (later owned by Tom Rix) as the winner of stock eliminator at the 72 AHRA Winternationals.

Are you suggesting finding old hardcopies or is there a way to do this online?

I checked the NHRA site and the records only go back to 1974; I searched on "National Dragster" and the back issues only go back to 1999.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Do you have a bit more detail on this book? I searched on Amazon.com and could not find it.

    (or could I borrow it...:Brow: )

Between you and what you learned from our dad, you could probably write a book like this. :Brow:

Attached is a photo of it. It's says at the bottom, "Performance summaries and race results from 1948 to 1974. Published by Gas Publishing."

I'll see the guy who gave it to me tonight and ask him where he got it. Paul

I was thinking it might be Tom's red Jones & Benisek stage 2 car.

Unfortunately nothing [I know of] online, so you're gonna have to hit Ebay...

I'm pretty sure it was a 440 car, but not sure if it was auto, or 4 gear car?
The owner said he thinks there is a possibility the car was run in Super Stock at one point as well.

In stock class, what would a 67 GTX be? B/stock ?

I can't find anything on a '67 GTX in the late '71 all through 72, and into 73 National Dragster records.... I checked Super Stock/stick, Super Stock/auto, Stock/stick and Stock/auto... in fact, there were very, very FEW Mopars under A and B classes...there WERE several Buicks mentioned though... mine and George Halls for two... couple others as well... I did not check any MP records..

Are you sure the sticker is legit? Reproduction "class winner" decals are available. Ive seen them for NY National and various other defunct tracks. They started appearing at least 15-20 years ago as I had one on my GS400. They make them in a water slide decal and they look pretty authentic. Just a thought. But if the gentleman owned the car back into the seventies, then it just might be a real one.

    Tom,
I believe the car would have been in D Stock, as I had a '69 Dart GTS 383 car and there was a '67 Coronet R/T 440 in the same class with me.

My class guide says a '67 GTX 440/375 is factored @ 9.61, which my '71 rule book tells me is F/S...

I don't think it's gonna be in S/S, 'cause my class guide doesn't show a factor for it in S/S, and that was a couple years before NHRA reworked stock & S/S to the way it is today.

my GS ran in C/SA in late 72-73.... it was in P/S and S in late 71 thru 72..

I'm fairly sure NHRA allowed small weight adjustments to move up or down at least one class. I know my 70 GS was run as a 70, 71, & 72 in both F/S and G/S in both NHRA and IHRA, setting the IHRA record a time or two during the 70's and early eighties. Same car was intermittently ran in SS/LA.

Without first hand info it can be very difficult to document one of these cars (stocker) history.

Cool car! Hope you find what your lookng for. :TU:

    For those scoring at home...

    '70 GS '455', Coupe 2dr (Hdtp)
    Original factor: stock - 9.13, s/s - 9.61

    Stock:
    1970 - E/SA
    1971 - E/SA
    1972 - A/SA
    1973 - C/SA

    Super/Stock:
    1970 - SS/H [s/s classes only went to "H" in '70-'71, for factors 9.50 and up]
    1971 - SS/H
    1972 - SS/H [s/s classes now went to "X" in '72, for factors 21.00 and up]
    1973 - SS/H

Jim: all of that look about right? I don't wanna draw too much away from Tom's thread here, but what all engine & class combos did that GS run?
