Gary you said on the first page of this thread that you still had a few degrees of timing to try. Do you mind saying what you currently have it set at, or what it was set for these runs? Thanks!
Philip, It was 30 and I went to 31 degrees. I have no reason to believe I don't have power to be gained with two or three more degrees. Not to mention trying a retard for higher RPM.
I've been running mine at 30 all year. That was actually my initial break-in setting and it's been running so good I just haven't felt the need to change it. Like you, I'm sure there's power to be gained by getting closer to 34. Had my best 60 of 1.3377 at 30.
Dyno was 27,29 and 31 which was the highest torque and HP. In hindsight I regretted not trying 33 after talking to several people. I mainly wanted to find peak and considering the engine breezed right past my expectations I was on cloud nine and it had been a long day, so I decided to get it in the car and let the timeslip dictate the rest of the story.
We picked up several tenths on our 464 last year going from a safe 31 to 35. Have yet to try any more
Gary your Iron Block 505 is impressive, I've read that build-up and For Sale thread more times than I can count. But this thing...I mean it's on a whole nother level! It's impressive and truly Inspiring! It gets me thinking about what is actually possible, especially with all of the goodies coming up on the Buick horizon! Thanks for including all of us!!
I bet 34 would make more hp but leaves little margin. I would have tried it on the dyno....once. I know I give up hp on my 464 going 34 retarding to 30 over 5K....but it has lasted 15yrs and many many passes
"Smart and hard working" are tremendous compliments! Thanks, I appreciate that. I'm just a part time bracket racer and Heads Up Dreamer. I knew as my engine was "snowballing" that I may end up in "No man's land" as far as race classes go. I can't compete with the Heads Up classes...my life just doesn't have room for that. And in my opinion the car is impractical for bracket racing as it is now. But, as it is I'm having fun chasing time slips and I've said on more than one occasion, if the fun ends I will be perfectly content to roll it back to high 5s and low 9s to index and bracket race. Just to give credit where due... Wayne's car is actually a backhalf car, not a full chassis although it is a 4-link. He also only runs a true 10.5 x 29.5 tire. In fact, until I recently started running radial we ran the same tire. The big difference is his car has an aluminum floor from the main hoop back and has fiberglass everything except roof and quarters along with lexan windows. His car will fit big tires but he's gone 1.08 60ft on the 10.5s required by the classes he runs. His car is very well set up and went 1-teen 60ft on the very first ever hit. My car is over 400lbs heavier than Wayne's and would require a pretty big makeover to lose that weight. At this point I'm facing the need to add the bars to certify to 7.50 and I'm hoping I can find some subtle places to remove weight to offset that at least. It ain't a streetcar anymore, but I don't want it to look like a racecar either.
For the wheelie fans...1.28 on the rear tires with a 275Radial. I did also go a 1.18 with the front wheels yesterday.
And it goes red on a pro tree, and you didnt guess at it, the yellow was clearly seen b4 any movement.
