Hello,...I am thinking of buying a 65 GS and it has a couple slight issues with cracked items......I have attached some photos of the items I would need. Right side fender spear, this one's broken,.....the panel that sits above the radio, this one's cracked......and the round piece that sits at the front of the console in place of the tach. I will need the piece that has the Tri-Shield logo on it,....another crack. (I didn't get a photo of that, but you can see what I mean in the interior photo, at the front of the console)
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    John

Here is the cowl tag as well,.....tell me what you can.
    Thanks!

The vv paint code is shell beige top and bottom, I think the 198 trim code is black, thats my best guess anyhow, sorry i can't help you on your parts search i'am on one my self with no luck.

    Great! Thanks Bob,....
Are those radio panels easy to replace???? How much are you asking for one?
Also the fender spears,......much for pitting? How much for one or two of those? And yes the headliner is silver with the black interior, I think it looks great. Would you have the Tri shield piece that sits in the front part of the console? I await your reply.......Thanks!

Doesn't the date code "08A" mean it was built the 1st. week of August, 1964??? I thought that the 1st. GS's in '65 were built sometime around January '65. Is that correct?? If it is the 08A must mean it may have been a Skylark in it's beginning life. Just my thoughts & observations.

What do you think??? Is Tom right, could this have been a Skylark then cloned?? Or could it have been one of the first GSs' built in 64???
    Thanks for your help.

I'm going to guess that its one of the last 65 GS' built, first week of August 65, not 64.

Did the 65 GS have the battery on the right side of the engine?

Battery is on the left (driver side).

It is my understanding that the model year changeover was started sometime around the 2nd. or 3rd. week of June & usually completed by the 1st. week of July. I have at my shop a '64 Riv. that has a build date of 07A, 1st. week of July. It has a lot of '63 parts on it, but it is defianetly a '64. I'm not trying to start any trouble, but I would hate to see someone pay GS price for a Skylark clone. The battery was located on the drivers side on a GS & the passenger side on a Skylark, Special, etc. Again, just my thoughts & observations.

Do you think someone would go to the trouble to clone a Skylark for 65, change all the badging and move the battery from pass side to drivers side? Is it worth doing that to a car that you have no paperwork to show it was a GS? MAYBE THAT'S THE BEAUTY OF IT,...HUH? See the photo of the engine enclosed.
    Thanks again, John

Honestly, I don't know enough about the early GS's to validate myself as any kind of expert. There is a guy in N.Y. that I believe has started a registry of some sort for the early GS's. His name escapes me at the moment, but I think it is Tony???

Bob, console was optional on the manual trans GS in 65. Also, the standard stick ratio was 3:36.
Tom, a close friend of mine has a 63 Impala SS with a 4th week of July 63 build date, thats what made me think that a car built this late wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

Bob, thats what I suspected, but wasn't sure. The 1 digit, 1 letter build code like your data plate is correct, some had an "0" before the week/month, but I don't know why some did and some didn't. One thing I've seen, there are inconsistencies, as well as mistakes on data plates. Was your car built in Fremont by any chance? Also, my car has 158 for the trim code, and it's a black interior, with silver headliner. One other thing intrigues me about yours, the 21 in the upper right corner. Mine is stamped with a 24 right there.

Wow talk about a thread hijack.
John, I have an extra set of fender ventiports if you end up with that car.

This has been buggin' me for hours. Lyin' in bed & it just popped into my head. His name is Anthony Gotta or Gatta. I believe he lives in or around the Queens area. I don't know what, if any, boards he may frequent, maybe this one. Now I can go back to bed & hopefully get a good nights sleep.

I appreciate all your help guys, It's nice to know you are there for the info needed! I am a little concerned about the trim below the taillights, but that shouldn't be a big thing.......(link below, your thoughts?).
Thanks again, and Mark, I'll take you up on the ventiports if I get it. I'll keep you posted.
    Thanks again,
    John

I just picked up a '65 GS .....build date is 08 C......translates to third week of August, 1965. Bet it's one of the last ones built! It's an original, numbers-matching, 4 speed convertible.....tho it's quite a basket case!

According to a Buick dealer info sheet dated Dec 17, 1964, production of the '65 GS Skylark was slated to begin the fourth week of January, 1965.
