Documenting my car

Discussion in 'The "Paper Trail"' started by IlliniGSX, Dec 2, 2019.

    IlliniGSX GSX #401

I got my documentation today from Wayne. My GSX was invoiced 4/29/70 and it was the 401 st GSX built. It was ordered by the dealer that I bought it from Giuffre Buick in Springfield IL. Any GSX owners out there with a car invoiced around mine?

    Thanks Jim

One of mine was also invoiced on 4/14/70 but it was 250th produced. Must be close to Redmanf 1. It’s a low optioned Saturn yellow stage 1.

Wayne was great to work with just had to be patient, I think he likes to do a couple or more at a time. The fee was nominal for the paperwork I received.

GSX #348 Invoiced 4/27/70. Only the dealer number appears on my documents, but further research revealed dealer to be Tatone Buick in Fairborn, OH. Ordered as a demonstrator.

Gary. Not my car, but feel free to edit your data. This car, invoiced the same day as mine, has a body number only three digits lower. VIN and GSX number are considerably higher.

Interesting Randy. Ours are seemingly consecutively numbered (348 / 349). It's fairly certain the number series isn't based upon invoicing. Has anyone determined how the numbers are derived?

There was a thread not too long ago where this was discussed extensively. Not sure I can find it but IIRC, @Duane was saying that they basically took the completed cars, less striping, and accumulated them in a space in the plant until the paint shop could get to striping them & the whole operation was a huge PIA. That could've been done in different ways (rows, lines, maybe even different areas) & so I'd assume if that's the case then they'd quite possibly (probably) have pulled for striping in a different order so the body #'s got shuffled around vs. however Wayne numbers them (not sure that was ever figured out). I assume Wayne's microfiche is based on the invoicing of the car to the dealership but not sure if it's in that order. In speaking to him once I got the impression it was in order of the VINs but I can't say for sure. I was also under the impression that once the car was invoiced that the dealer started paying interest to GMAC at that point so there was an urgency to invoice the cars as soon as possible and so I'd think the invoice date is probably the closest thing we have to when the car rollled off the line. I assume GSXs were a unique situation there in that the car was complete & had been driven off the assembly line but wasn't really complete because it still needed striping. I'd think that meant it couldn't be invoiced but maybe they were at that point given the unique situation. The clerks who were invoicing cars could've gotten notice that the car rolled off the line just like every other car and invoiced them. We'll never know for sure but it would be interesting to know what Wayne bases his GSX numbering system off of.

I recall reading that particular thread as well. I suppose, unless he were to chime in, the method Wayne uses to derive his numbering system will remain subject to speculation. I question whether it was invoice ordered due to mine being #348 invoiced 4/27/70 and Randy's #349 invoiced 4/30/70. It could well be that Wayne's basis is by VIN, but it certainly wouldn't be prudent to go listing those numbers on an open forum such as this one.

My GSX # 323 was invoiced on 04/23/70
When I talked to Wayne it was interesting to know the microfilm is not in a order that you would think it would be. Wayne said its not simple to decode the GSX's because they are mixed in with other cars and its not like they are all in one spot to look up. Its interesting to note my car is a very low option car and I wonder if some cars with higher options may have taken longer to build or if they were waiting on parts ? I don't think they are all in a exact order of being made for whatever reason.

That makes sense since other than the striping, they were just another car to the assy. plant. Even the yellow ones as a non-standard color weren't that unusual.
