I know this sounds odd but if you hit the animal and it is killed in the accident will they let you keep it?
For instance a moose or a big horn ram and you’re lucky enough to not be hurt but the animal is dead or needs to be dispatched. Would the responding authorities allow you to keep the animal? I’ve always wanted to do a dall sheep hunt. But the big horn ram hunts are more then some of what are cars are worth

In Maine you keep the animal if you hit it. You need to move quickly to save the meat.

Hi, as far as I know you need to call the authorities and inform them about the dead animal and sometimes they will let you keep it and other times they won’t. Often times I’ve heard of people simply putting them in the back of the truck and going home, but technically that’s illegal here.

Illegal here too. You need a harvest tag to transport one or have one.
Most people are not prepared for taking care of one hit on the road. And depending how hard it is hit, it may not be worth it.
I know In Alaska if Fish and Game or Troopers are present at crash they will take the critter and donate it to someone who needs the meat.
I kind of wish Minnesota and other states would do that. But that would me a butcher donating time, a road crew to retrieve ect. ect.
Would help a lot of families who need it.

Most homeless shelters here can process a deer or roadkill in short order.
Police here give you an ownership tag at the scene.

Wow! 7mm mag? That's a hard one to beat, I have some sort of odd 7mm problem. I've had 2 7 mag's, a 7mm-08, and I currently have a 7x57 in the safe. I'd like to have a 280 but I don't have a good enough excuse to add another one to the hoard.

I just saw a nice size carcass on the side of the interstate and the head was cut off. I quest someone has a trophy mount that they didn’t kill.

Our state for the most part you hit it you can keep it. There is the game and wildlife number you call with your info so they have record that you have possession of the animal. But they are picky. You can’t just take what you want and leave the rest there. You have to take the entire animal and dispose of the carcass at your home.
I was just curious because right now I think we’re up to about 1500 deer that we’re hit since pre rut. They usually project 3500-4000 that get recorded from mid October to the end of November.
For as expensive of a hunt a moose or a big horn sheep could be, yes I’d be that guy (you could shame me). I’m definitely taking the animal as long as it’s 100% legal and non intentional. A moose guided moose hunt I think is well over 20k if you ever get drawn. A big horn sheep whether it’s a dall, desert, stone, mountain I’ve heard of guys paying 40-50 thousand dollars. And that’s not a guarantee your coming home with one

Since we’re on the topic are any of you fellas state having issues with CWD and EHD? Right now I think they shut down about 40% of the deer ranches/farms that tested positive for cwd.

I know where the moose are here. I'm just waiting for that winning lottery ticket. Not too expensive if you are self sufficient and have a friend that is a butcher. He and his wife just got a large moose this fall. She won the ticket this year

CWD was found in the state 5-6 years ago. Mandatory testing in units found and neighboring units. They lowered to only the ones it was found in this year.
One thing to remember about moose. If you hit them in anything under 4-5 feet tall, you usually just break their legs and they land on top of the car.
You might not be able to process them.
The best year we had in Alaska was 5 moose, 2 caribou and a grizzly.
We were on horse back and would skin and 1/4 the day we got them and return with pack horse to pick up next.
Never had one stolen by griz, but the griz we did get was at the moose kill site the day after we packed out the meat.

I can only imagine the damage. I’ve seen a bull walking and its tracks. And I got to see to cows cross the river on a Canadian fishing trip. I was amazed just how big the cows were if I was ever to hunt one and how hard it would be to get that back to camp. That’s an amazing story. There’s a couple animals I’d love to hunt but the cost and knowing someone that knowns the landscape. As well as having a dedicated hunting buddy helps too.

Even birds. I’ve heard sand hill cranes are delicious. We can’t hunt them in our state unless you own a farm and can prove that they are devastating your crops the fish and game will bring people in to hunt them or try to re locate them. They say it’s the rib eye of the sky. The Native Americans here run most of the water and woods. If there’s 10 elk tags 5 go to the Native Americans. 1 gets raffled to the highest bidder and 4 lucky people out the entire state get a chance at an elk.

Most of the time the people involved with hitting moose are more interested in staying alive after a collision:

Another. I’ve been clipping 80 mph in a mini van when a moose with a 10-12 foot tall back ran out in front of the vehicle, missed it by about 6”, I was 16 driving and my parents and siblings were all sleeping. The crazy thing is that I was about 20 feet behind a semi truck so he jumped out between the vehicles.
