Apparently I have a bad carrier bearing - and I'm having no luck finding a replacement. Anyone know where I can get the bearing and the support?

    My car is a 67 Riv with a TH400.

See your local driveline/shaft shop...This is a good reason to always fill out your profile and put what state you are in?

Oldbuickparts.com had the bearing for $36.00 and the support for $87.50 - Olcar didn't have anything and I have now filled out my profile (as much as I can). Thanks for the help, guys!

So I finally got the bearing and the support - now my mechanic says I need a "setup kit". He doesn't deal with old cars on a regular basis so he's not sure where to get it. Apparently there used to be a local shop that dealt with that kind of stuff, but they have since closed. What is this "setup kit"?

You'll have to ask your mechanic to be more specific. That is not common terminolgy. Is he referencing the carrier bearing and mount, something else on the driveshaft, or ???? If you post more detail on exactly what he is talking about I'm sure we can help.

By the sounds of it....are you talking about the driveshaft or rear differential? It seemed at first you needed the driveshaft carrier but by your mechanics reply it sounds like you broke a differential main cap along with needing a differential "carrier" bearing. Thats the only reason i can think of that he'd say you'd need a "set-up" kit. You wouldn't need a "set-up" kit to replace a driveshaft carrier brg. nor really the diff. carrier brg. and race. I'm at a loss as to help you with the correct info....Anyone else have an idea for this gentleman?

It's the driveshaft that I'm dealing with - maybe it would be easier if you guys could direct me to someone nearby that knows their stuff? I can take it to Chattanooga Driveline (recommended a few posts up) if needed, but it's about an hour and forty-five minutes away so I'd have to get it towed.

A set up kit will have the pinion shims and carrier shims etc. BUT if all your doing is replacing the same gears HE DOES NOT NEED all this stuff.

The crush sleeve is the last important thing you could need. IF you can not find one I am sure we can figure out how to reuse the old one...This is NOT recommended to normally do so PM me and I will tell you what you can do as I do not want to have everyone thinking they can do it and it is OK. BUT if you have obsolete parts and can not find them you have to do what you can. Jim

What EXACTLY are you dealing with on the driveshaft that you need a set up.... to balance it? what is this SET UP you need...

SPECIFIC .... Be very Specific, this is the internet and we see thru your words of descriptive description.....without that we can't help you...

    Pictures and or video...

Here's a picture of what I have and it is (supposedly) what I need to install. Does that help?

Yes, no set-up needed. First you'll have to install that brg. into the carrier housing by using a large socket or pipe that fits the outer diameter of the bearing but will fit into the carrier support bracket without getting stuck. Remove the spring retainer, drive it in and then replace the spring retainer. There is a large nut attached to the male splined yoke on the rear section just behind the bearing. Unscrew that nut (there is sometimes a retainer that is bent over the flat of the nut that keeps the nut from backing off) and slide the rear section out of the female splined front shaft section. Tap off the old bearing being careful not to damage the dirt / dust slinger. Remember which way the support faces is important. Using a piece of pipe that fits the small dia. of the bearing but will fit over the female splined part, tap on the new brg. support and reinstall the rear section. Re-tighten the nut and lock it down with its retainer. Presto, your finished! Feel like i'm writing a book...LOL

With all due respect, if your mechanic needs instructions to install the carrier bearing and support, you might want to take your car to someone else. For any repair shop that makes a living fixing cars, even ones that don't for that matter, this is a VERY elementary job needing no instruction. I am at a loss for words. It almost seems like there is more to the story. :Do No: In any event you are wise by asking for help here.

Also make sure to mark the front and rear halves of the drive shaft so you put in back together in the prior orientation.
