That's one of the reasons I didn't go to Gateway this last time...too many guys out there to oil the track for the last time. It always ends up a 6 hour night with one or 2 runs in.

Brave enough or stupid enough? Good thing he still has a face. The hood is the last thing I would have opened. What good could it do anyway except fan the flames and melt his face?

No sh1T. What good is a safety crew standing at the starting line? :error:

    Let that be a lesson..

I always carried a small Halon Fire extinquisher in my race cars.. lots of stuff can burn before the track crew gets there, unless your racing in a NHRA national event..

Never had to use it, but it was always there.

I've never raced a car. But, my grandfather was a fire fighter. He taught me; opening a hood on an engine fire provides a better flow of oxygen to the fire. He said one should shoot an extinguisher under the car into the engine bay to prevent as much oxygen from getting to the fire before opening the hood.

Halon is the best. Or CO2 type. But the ones in the vid look look like soda acid types. Or, are they chemical foam? I didn't see much foam. I would've thought a CO2 type, might have done better.

Looks like a trans line let go. From the smoke at first steaming off the exhaust before going up to a flash fire

I think I'm a little biased.. My earlier comment about the crew laughing was based on the thought of "another mustang gets what it deserves." However you're right, it does look like it has had alot of money and effort put into it. Looked like a very strong launch, but I cant help but wonder, could it have been driver error that caused it to go up in flame? Too much rpm building excess pressure that causes the fire?

Just taking some guesses based on the way the car lurches when positioning itself (could be the result of a very high stall as well? I've no experience in this area.) Seems like an in-experienced driver for the car to me.

I had that happen on a 92 LX Mustang I had back in University... On the highway... the cabin starts to fill with smoke?? I turn around to look at a couple friends in the back.. and smoke is coming up though the seat around them?? WTF...

There was no line broke... but somehow the car spit out a load of trans fluid and it hit the exhaust... luckily for me it was just smoke and no fire.
I let it cool, drove it home and for yrs after and it never did it again.

    I feel for the guy.

    I have a big 20# CO2 ($150). Easily put out a big fire.

took way to long for the safety crew. here at my track we are already putting on our fire gear when we even see flames an we are there as soon as the car stops. never takes more than 15 seconds to get there unless we got another one going on closer. even then we have enough staff to take care of everything

Driving to the Nationals in 2003 my 94 ford Explorer puked out transmission fluid in the hills of West Virginia. Made it to a Ford Dealer in Bowling Green, KY and they told me I toasted my trans and needed replacement! I told them I drove over 400 miles when it happen and it stilled shifted fine. My explorer only had 60,000 miles on it in 2003, so I told them just to flush out all the trans fluid and till this day I am still running the same trans and now have 150,000 miles on it!
