Pulled onto the freeway the other day and as I was moving over into the right hand lane from the entrance lane a brand new Mustang GT came up beside me and stomped it. The car didn't even have plates on it yet. There were two young bucks in it giving me the grin as they pulled away. Now I have a tendency to be pretty proud of my 1970 Buick GS Convertible and I definately take this as a challenge as I am sure you all understand. I pulled over into the fast lane behind them and they really stomped the pedal to the metal so I did the same. After about 3/4 of a mile they finally pulled over into the right hand lane as they could see they were not going to get me off of their bumper ( sorry but I just love doing that). Once they pulled over into the right lane I pulled up along side them and gave them the old Buick grin like "Boys you bit of more than you could chew" at which point we were out of traffic and we both proceeded to stomp the horsepower. As much as they tried they couldn't stay up with the raw horsepower and torque of my old Buick and I soon left them in my dust. I pulled off at the next exit and as I was exiting they went by. The one fellow in the passenger seat was worshiping me with both hands in the air like he was praying to some eastern god. Made my day..... :3gears: ...Pops

  4. It must have been a major bruise to the owner's ego to have gone out and spent all this money on a new GT only to get spanked!

Nice Kill!! I'm glad someone out there gets to drive their car around. The weather up here has been horrible. It's supposed to be in the 40's this time of year with lows in the 20's. We're lucky if it gets in the upper 20's. Really putting the squeeze on me to get this 200-4R swap done in time for Norwalk. At this rate I may be racing my electric scooter.

Thats a great kill! Those new stangs have around 330hp. I would be angry if I lost to a old Buick also. But since I love Buicks and know how much torque they have I wouldnt race against one.

Good kill - maybe you could come and avenge me. About a year ago I was in a similar situation, but the Stang turned out to be a new Cobra - and he just walked away from me after 70 mph.

Being a 71 boattail owner, I'm quite leery of taking on some of the new tech off the line, but she was always quite good at the top end or was it that they realize that they were dealing with a lunatic.

The 293 rearend in the riv really comes on once you start hitting 90 and the 120 speedo is quickly lost towards the odometer, being a 130k car I always back off at some point because she ain't what she used to be.

So how fast is a 71 riv going when you can see the needle in the odometer?

if you've got a tach or install one you can figure it out.

see how fast you're going at 3000 rpm, divide your mph by 3000 and then multiply by whatever your rpm is when you've got the needle buried.

or, measure the distance between your 5 mph increments on your speedo and then measure how far past 120 you are.

of course, this may require another high speed run to make sure you've got all the specifics. :3gears:

Take those cars to the German Autobahn, and let them run on top speed for 2 hours, see which one is the fastest car after that.

I always smile about the American way of a "great kill", real speed is not set in a quarter mile :spank:

The autobahn would be the ultimate place to take a BBB that is low geared...Top end can be useful too. :Brow: :TU:

Sounds like a challenge!!! Be honest do you think that the ford could run 2 hrs STRAIGHT at that RPM without coming to a clunkin' stop? :spank:
Just let me change the rear end!!!! :3gears:

You are absolutely right; however, quickness is!

"Faster" and "fastest" are two different things. I'd rather have a car that will get to the next stoplight faster than a car that will be the fastest over 40 miles.

In reality, we race in short distances. Light to light or up to 100mph sometimes. Not too many people race over 100mph on the streets. Traffic, curves, stop signs, pedestrians and lights are all factors, not to mention the police. This is not Germany. Boy am I glad it is not!

Erik didn't like the kill, but I do.
