If you were to remove the valve covers you would be able to see all the rockers going up and down as the engne turns over... If you have a flat lobe you might have a rocker that does not go up and down.

I would advise against doing this untill you run out of other options, i still think you are more likely to have a carb issue.

Can you find any numbers on the carb? I really do not like using generic carbs on these engines. They require mods and tuning to make them work well in most cases and fuel milage is lower than with a Q jet.

I would send the carb away to Carmantx or Everyday Performance, either of these guys can likely fix your carb up good as new.

Read Larry's power timing thread in the "stickies" section top learn about timing.

just thought id add that it seems wolffang and i are having similar issues.

im gonna get myself a timing light and a vac guage.

there is a ton of numbers on this holley carb none of them seem to add up though

heres the ones off the front 80457-8 over 2319, i cant find anything on what the -8 means the other numbers ive found are on the side that has the throttle linkage and those numbers are 11761 and 8105b.

i found a carb place locally thats been around for a while there site says they specialize in qjets so im gonna check on that and give em a call see if they can salvage my q jet.

and im also lookin at a new in box ta 1235 intake which i may just get from a guy near me he only wants $225 for it.

Looks like a 600 cfm Holley.

The TA intake is good for weight savings however I would not expect any difference in how it runs... Spend the $ on your Q jet.

update: got a timing light with an advance dial and a vac guage so ill check the vacum once i get the new gaskets and carb back on. got the carb off today gonna give it the once over in the morning see if i can see any thing wrong with it. the dizz was hooked up to full vac for some reason (dont know if it matters). im gonna hook it up to the timed vac line see if that makes a differance. then im gonna venture into actually checking the timing and if need be adjusting it. going to definately read larry's timing thread a few times over tonight. the local carb guy here isnt open on weekends:Dou: so cant get an estimate on my qjet.

Double check 5 and 7 spark plug wire position as they are easely mixed up . The car will run fine with no load but start to pop out the carb under load .Been there done that...double check it .

double checked the wires there all in the right place. new carb gaskets didnt help. made sure all the vac ports othere than the one i was using was plugged that didnt help either.

How about putting the vacuum gauge on the engine and giving us a number?

alright stupid question but should i hook the vac guage up to one of the carbs vac ports or somewhere else?

Hook it up to any port that gives vacuum at idle. :beer

It has to be hooked to a port with manifold vacuum, not ported vacuum. Very easy to tell the difference. With the engine running at idle, pull a hose off. If it is manifold vacuum, you will hear a strong hiss. That is the port you want. If you hear nothing, that is ported, not the one you want. There should be a suitable one on the carburetor, but it can also be on the intake, as long as you hear the hiss.

That video is most interesting and informative. I don't know much about these new Buick engines (newer than '58). Is the Buick 350's #1 cylinder the driver's side front?

I hate to jump to conclusions about the valvetrain, but see post number 23 for your next step, removing the valve covers for further inspection on cam/lifter/pushrod/rocker health.

ok so do i take the cover off and start the engine or .....?

No, you don't have to run the engine. Just remove the valve covers, and you can either turn the engine with a socket on the crankshaft bolt, or remove the coil wire and have someone crank the engine while you watch. If you have one or more rocker arms moving a lot less than the others, we can go from there.

I would also suspect a loose timing chain... That would cause a bouncing vacuum reading as well.
