Let's get back to basics here... Battery cable goes to starter. Should be 12v at the starter at all times. Check it! When you turn the key to crank, the purple wire to the starter gets 12v. Check that too. If the starter is getting 12v and the purple wire is getting 12v when in the crank position, you have a bad starter Male sure the purple wire is on the S terminal and not on the R terminal!
Hello All. Thank you again for your diagnostic support! So today I had a chance to inspect the fuse links and they appear to be intact. Again, all accessories are working. I was able to bypass the solenoid by using a 10 gauge wire and touching the hot lead on the solenoid to the purple wire terminal switch and as sparks flew it does engage the starter motor plunger which leads me to believe that it is NOT the starter/solenoid or the fuse links. This leads me back to the neutral safety switch or a transmission switch. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank You!!
So it seems the purple wire isn't getting 12v on crank. Next step is to find the neutral safety switch. It's at the base of the steering columnunder the dash. You'll see a plug with two purple wires connected to it. 12v in and 12v out to starter. Disconnect the plug and grab your multimeter or your test light. With the key in the crank position, one of the purple wires should have 12v. If it does, the neutral safety switch is either no good or not adjusted correctly. If you really want to test it, make a jumper wire and jump out the neutral safety switch. MAKE SURE THE CAR IS IN PARK BEFORE YOU START IT. If it cranks by jumping the switch, its in the switch Now if there isn't 12v on the purple wire, we'll need to go to the ignition switch...
Hey @Michael Oldham if the riv has a center console, the neutral safety switch will be in center console next to the gear shift. Otherwise, same procedure that Jason described
It could be the neutral safety is out of adjustment (like was said above); try the finesse approach: try to crank it in ‘Really Park’, ‘Sorta Park’, ‘Almost Reverse’, ‘Almost Neutral’, ‘Almost Drive’ etc. Also, reach under the dash and squeeze the ignition switch together-sometimes the ‘68s can open up and lose contact there. Problem Fixed! It ended up being the Neutral safety switch that just needed adjustment. I did learn some valuable tips along the way. Thank you to everyone who shared there knowledge and support. We can't do this alone!
Glad you found the issue, I've had to tweak the position of my neutral-safety switch as well, including the strings for the PRNDLL needle...
