    Are there any out there?

My 64 is getting a 430 and i'm afraid i'll be blowing up my Borg Warner Stock 3 speed.

    Thanks Joe

Funny, I was just researching this.

With reference to how the vettes of the era were equipped, 65 was the last year for the 3spd muncie which was a non-synchro first gear. From what I can decipher, in 66 they went to Saginaw 3spd as standard. There is also reference to the Borg Warner T-16, which gave me the impression maybe it was the heavy duty trans for the big blocks. But that's purely a guess. I'm sure someone else on here could clarify.

I would have thought a Saginaw or T-16 would be a better bet since they were used on the high performance 66 - 69 Corvettes and would also have a synchro first.

Yes, the 66 V6 and small-block Buicks got the Saginaw 3 speed. The 65-66 big-block GS used a Ford toploader 3 speed.
There was a heavy-duty Muncie 3 speed used in the later GS's. I just saw a post on it. Good info here:

So to answer your question, No. AFAIK, Buick didn't use Muncie 3 spd in 64-65.
    How about a 4 speed?

  5. The Muncie 3 speed was available in 69 SS396 base model cars. also came in 69-71 Chevy vans. I have seen a couple on Ebay and none sold at opening bid of 100.00, use MC-1 as your search term along with Muncie 3 speed. the harder thing to find is a good hurst shifter for a muncie 3 speed as they use a different set of linkage than the saginaws

here is a picture of a Muncie 3 speed.. looks a lot beefier than the BW in your car now. when looking for one pay close attention to the side cover bolt arrangement as thats the best way to tell it from a saginaw. all of your V6 clutch linkage will work in the big block conversion. even the V6 bellhousing and it will hold a 12 inch clutch.

So anyone know what the 65 BW T-10 in my 65 Skylark is worth?I'am under the understanding that this is a factory correct trans from the car. It's a factory 4-speed car and this is the trans that came with it. Thanks,Tom

    lol cool Tom. :beer

  13. The original 65-66 T-10 transmissions that came in the nailhead powered GS cars had a high nickel content gear set and are extremely rare. they are a very strong transmission and should bring every bit as much as an M-21 or M-20 would and possibly a bit more. I have had a couple of these and they are extremely tough to find parts for

    wheelz 'B' is for Buick.

Hey there, Bob in Montana..this question is for you! WHAT is that long, bent steel bracket hangin off the shifter linkage??:Do No: It sorta looks long enuf that when you downshifted..that bracket would DIG INTO THE ROAD and help slow you down?? LOL ..ya know..a Fred Flintstone type braking system? :bla: Wheelz, Tampa Bay

i cut that off and prepped the arm to look stock after i made sure the linkage was going to work. I had a heck of a time finding linkage to fit that Muncie 3 speed.

Bob..the reason I asked is the 3 speed linkages I have from a 70 455 HAS that weird bracket..but I don't think these are the original linkages anyway..however, the shifter is indeed a Buick 3 speed. IN fact....:Smarty: guru Dave Kleiner has my 3 speed shifter using it for reproduction purposes...I think he is also trying to locate three completely different setups for Buick 3 speeds...Saginaw, Muncie and BW. :beers2: THAT would've made your life much simpler huh. :TU: Wheelz, Tampa Bay

Hi Bob. Is this tranny something I could use?

None of my linkages would work with the 4 speed though.

    3 speed anyone?
There is a 3 sp saginaw on ebay. Can someone tell me if it's useable in my application?

Joe, nice talking to you earlier! Thought I'd write this out in case someone can add to my info here...
eBay trans...That's a Saginaw 3 speed. Same as came in the V6 Special parts car I bought (except for different ratios). It's fine for a small block car, but it won't last behind a big block. The earlier 65-68-ish big block cars used the Ford toploader 3 speed, as GM didn't have a strong 3 speed. Not sure when GM switched to the Muncie 3 speed....somewhere around 68-70.
Another issue with that eBay trans is it doesn't appear to have the mounting bosses on the tailshaft for a floor shifter.....so you'll have to find that special shifter mounting plate....I did post a pic of mine somewhere.

It's a tough call in your case....a 4 speed and shifter could run you $600+, but I'd suggest you keep looking for that elusive Muncie 3 speed. I'd bet there are some out there where the owner only knows it's 'just' a 3 speed, and not a 'rare 3 speed' .
I'll keep an eye out for ya!:TU:

The pleasure was all mine Walt.:Smarty:

I appreciate the info and will keep looking for the Muncie.:eek2: In the meantime i'll probably install the 430 to the Borg Warner thats in there and hope for the best. See how long it lasts!!
