Hello, has anyone done this before and is this difficult? I am restoring a 78 and thinking about doing this. I wanted to know from anyone with experience how difficult this may be.

    Thanks

Had they gone to FWD by 78? If so that may be a problem.

    Isn't a 572 a Chevy create engine?

Not until model year 1979, the 1977 and 1978 Rivieras were B-body cars.

    I believe so.

Mark, I would like to know how this goes. I own a couple of 77's and would like to stay in touch as I don't find many people with these cars. :)

I'd think a 78 came with a Buick engine? What's in it currently? Your simplest swap will be replacing a Buick engine with a Buick engine.

The only motor options in 78 (for the Riviera) were the Buick 350 and the Olds 403, if I'm not mistaken. The 403's were more popular in 78.

Here's the deal. Everybody has good points, but the current motor and tranny is done. I am using new parts. The 572 is a crate motor. I don't know of any new buick crate motors. This is a car I will keep forever and prefer to use new parts including engine and transmission. The olds 403 in it is a dog, and has not been treated well all these years, a and the tranny is dead. If anyone has any ideas, I am welcome to it. And yes, the the 572 is a chevy motor, but with a new drivetrain, I'm not sure if it matters anymore. here's a question for you.....Will a 455 be a direct bolt in to the current 3spd tranny in it now?

Yes a 455 will bolt where the olds was. The TA frame pads will bolt to the frame and then some wiring and your on your way

He'd pay more for a Buick motor that makes the same power as the 572 without the parts support. Who cares what brand motor goes in the car? It came with and Olds, so would it be any more or less sacrilegious if he put a Olds 455 in it? I say go for it. The 572 is proven, reliable, no oiling issues or weak block issues and the swap is no harder than mounts and exhaust work. Go for it man, keep that Buick on the road however you can.

well lets compare.................. $10K for a 572 basic engine from Summitt..... I can see 650 horsepower easily from a buick 494 kit from TA for that kind of money.......

I really like this response. I am trying so hard to keep this thing rolling, but I am having a hard time finding people to do the work in Dallas. I have been calling paint and body guys and they just don't seem to want to do the work. Also, I am having a hard time getting someone to do motor, tranny and pain all in one shop.
I found a 572 motor for 11,900 shipped. So tempting.

Well, just spoke with TA. They don't have frame mount pads for the car and an ebay search came up blank. Is this something that can be fabricated? It seems that only a 403 olds block can fit in this thing easily.
