I've built many 470,482 and 494 combos, the 482 and 494 run about the same,a 470 is somewhat slower especially in a heavy car due to the extra torque. We've never broke a 494.but some guys claim the 2.00 crank pin has failed for them. Most of the strokers I do now are the 482 with light crower chevy nascar rods, nearly the weight of aluminum but will last forever.I use the same rods on the 525's. gary
Hannes, keep in mind this thread is in the RACE section, and I'm pretty sure you aren't planning on making a race car out of your 5000 lb Electra. You might find the Street/Strip section more relevant to what you want to do with your boat.
I am sorry, I did not see that I am in the race section. BUT if the 494 dont fail in race cars, it wont in a street-yacht. Good to know that now....
The rod is a small block chevy big journal,2.10" offset ground crank,6.8" long.I don't know if theres a part # since its a custom rod,I just give the specs. After you get the rod choice determined then a custom piston is usually needed for the compression height. You could probably play with the rod length to get a more standard piston, but I like longer rods so use the 6.8 and sometimes go to 7.00,thse are primarily race motors but I've done a few street ones with the 6.8 and they are in the 10s on pump gas and 3600#s. The rods aren't cheap,$1550 per set. gary
Should I go with the TA 494-kit? Unfortunately it seems to be quite pricy. The advantage is I can be sure it is ready to install. Are there kits balanced?
Just answered my own question. All of the rods I see are around 6.2 in length and 1.90 on the big end. What happened to Smokey saying run the longest rod possible?
If you created the 494 rotating assembly yourself ,you'd have that much into it. It should already be balanced. gary
That was from days gone by before good flowing heads hit the market place. The longer rod would dewell longer at TDC helping to fill the cylinder better but now they say with the good heads out there the engine will accelerate harder with a short rod and good heads.
There should be some experience on the performance of the TA-494-kit paired with there heads on street engines as it is a common combo since years. The heads alone with a matching cam and intake is good for 500hp I have read. How much with the stroker, over or under 600hp? Mabye seasoned with underdrive pullies, full length headers and X-over and an eletric fan.
Let me ask this... Who has the longest running 494? I will have to look at my receipts, but think I built mine in 1994'ish. Pretty sure mine is the first one out there. Back then, I called Mike with the idea of an offset grind crank when my mopar 440 friends were doing this. He said he would think about it. Mike called back and said he would have the crank done but I would be on my own to have the rods and pistons done, he gave me the dimensions (which are different than todays kit) so it was just a few calls and $$ to some rod and piston companies. BTW, Mine is still running in my heavy 10.50 car and looking for some 10.20's or better next year.
Guy: I think I got you beat. ( not bragging) My 494 was built a little before that by Dan Hopkins. ( Made 800 hp.) Steel rods twin Dom's on it., 440 mopar pistons. That motor is now in Denmark. JW freshened up and sold it to a customer. Ken
Guy: All I remember it was a 1/4 (.250) off set grind on the crank and it also had crower ( chevrolet) rods. Was running lots of compression also. way over 13:1. Ken
