The type of machine work required to get cylinder heads to flow better (porting) isn't what most shops handle, and knowledge of the Buick designs is a huge plus if you find a shop that does it. Personally I recommend Greg Gessler for cylinder head work, see http://www.gesslerheadporting.com .

I also recommend you visit http://www.taperformance.com and download their catalog...good reading.

Thnx again man!! Ill have to check with my friend.., hes the one that has a shop an does motor maching for a living and see if he does porting... My biggest problem is i cant make up my mind on if i want to go big or keep close to stock like my old man always did. I got the car from him and its in memory of him that ive redone some of it. I see that a main rebuild master kit for the 455 is 568$... I already have aluminum intake and have a set of headers if i decide to use them. I am on a budget to a point. Any recomendations on what i should do. Im sure it will automatically have to be bored.... im sure i should go with a hotter cam in other words... any suggestions??

If your looking strictly at horsepower/dollar, aluminum is the best way to go. Ported cast heads are still a great option for a nice strong street engine.

Beginning somewhere around 525-550 hp is where the aluminum heads begin to make more sense.

That kit is going to have cast pistons that aren't designed for a motor in the 500hp range. If you truly want to have power in this range, you're going to have to spend more on parts/pieces.

You'll likely want to run forged pistons (Wiseco or Sealed Power are two of the popular choices), you'll want to consider cam bearings such as the dual-grooved ones sold by TA Performance. Buicks have oiling issues that need to be addressed, so you don't want to buy these "all-in-one" kits unless they're put together by a company that works a lot of Buicks. That kit comes with a cam. I can guarantee that it won't be a cam that will get you anywhere near 500 hp. Plus, it's probably designed on a Chev-style pattern, which isn't going to be optimal for a Buick.

You may want to ask yourself why you want a 500 hp motor. If you're not used to that kind of power, and don't plan on taking it to the track, it may be overkill.

A little more basic rebuild with good heads, intake, headers, etc... could put you in the 400-450 range, and not require so much expensive hardware. And it will be more streetable, if that's where you plan on driving the car.

    Hey Dad's GS
Where about in Michigan are you located? Check out Finishline Performance in Hastings, they put together my BBB and it makes @ 520 hp/550 tq.
Send me a PM if you need more info.

  14. alec296

    alec296 i need another buick

try conical dish forged pistons from ta perfromance and their ta310 camshaft
or something up to the ta 290-08 cams
ported stock heads with standard valves will bring up torque and still get you there, so you dont have to go alum or all out porting(can save that for later)
trishield has some nice stuff and i have my engine there now. of course im passing the 500 hp by far(the engine in it now is around that)
carb is important as buicks tend to like them bigger. 850 at least
fuel system and ignition system mighty important
H or X pipe exhuast will help
oil mods are important as well or you can lose engine , do it right the first time. those mods can be found on trishields website, also trishield is owner and supporter of this free site so donations will help keep it here:TU:
it dont have to be much just show some support
check the forsale section you might find some stuff you may want/need
    good luck

Hastings is over on the west side of the state and I've heard nothing but great things about Finishline (never used them myself, but I did a lot of talking to people about who to use) but if you're on the east side, anywhere near Ann Arbor/Detroit, I just had my heads done at a place called Flow Technologies in Plymouth, MI (734) 454-4190. The guy who did mine (Birdie) did a great job on them and worked with me all the way through the process and explained exactly what I needed. He gets really good pricing on most of his stuff, but if you find it cheaper at say someplace like Summit, he doesn't bat an eye for wanting to use them. I got the basic port job on my heads and it was $250, he took so much "junk" out of the heads, it just has to run better. He also totally rebuilt the heads from ground up, so I won't have any issues later, for the additional $$. He was recommended by another list member who has worked with him for years and in fact one day when I went over there, they had a BBB sitting on the dyno waiting to be run. I wish I could have stayed to watch them break it in, but had to get back to work.

I can't wait for the crappy weather to go away, so I can get back to working on my car!! :pp

I live about 3 miles from Flow Technologies. I sold them my spare 4 speed flywheel to run Buick motors on their dyno. I know of a few other GS guys who have taken their heads there for work. Good luck with your car, I hope to see you at some get togethers this year.

Michaels racing egines in Macedonia Ohio has done a few motors for me, Including the stroker in my Sig, but in response to your question. we did a, 74 455 .030 forged pistons, otherwise stock short block, with arp bolts, 67 430 heads w stage 1 valves, ported with roller rockers, ta 290-08HL cam, TA sp1 intake, 850 holley DP, and a recurved HEI, this motor made 560 hp and 565 tq.

I had a very streetable 455 built by Ruge Automotive in Eureka, Kansas. It put out 545 horse power and 562 Ft./Lbs of torque on the engine dyno. He used the T/A hemi killer cam, forged pistons, of course. I think we were at about 10.6:1 compression ratio. I went with the T/A stage 2 street eliminator heads, don't believe any port work was done. I also had 1.6 T/A roller rockers. Induction was via a T/A single plane intake and a 1000 cfm race demon. I'm sorry that I don't have better specs on cam timing and lobe seperation. The rotating assembly was balanced and all needed machine work done. Good luck!

Hey Scott, I might have met you last summer, is your car that black cherry color? It's hard to tell from your avatar. If that's you, I have some picures of your car from 2005, although they are somewhat blurry. They are from up on Wide Track Dr., in Pontiac

I was at the Lighthouse in 2005 and in Birmingham last year at a gas station to watch the Woodward Cruise. There was a beautiful Camaro that some punk kids ran into with a bicycle that night last summer. They though that they were just going to run off, until the two huge, biker looking guys who drove it down there, grabbed hold of them and called the police. :spank:

Hopefully, I'll be at some more gatherings this year, I only made it to Norwalk last summer and had a great time (except for all the rain). I'm hoping to make it back down there and also to the races that they moved from Indy to Columbus, OH this year.

One of these days I might get my car back together, I just don't know exactly where to work on it first. :) I just got the ball joints and will be picking up the front bushings next week. And, I finally found a place that will do my core support repair, since my welding skils leave a lot to be desired, but they are booked through the spring. That's okay though, I've got to save up some $$ to fund the rest of the project.
