1971 Power Steering Pressure Line

My '71 GSX had a replacement PS hose on it that must have been done early in it's life. That hose has developed a series of cracks. I bought the Autozone 70235 hose (recommended in another thread) and the bends are completely different that the replacement hose that was on there. As I don't know what an original hose looks like, it's hard to say if the Autozone replacement has the original bends. Does anyone have a picture of a '71 original hose?

I know the foam sleeve is an issue and I've been looking for something to replicate it, but there doesn't seem to be much out there. The closest I have found is this:

    http://www.gripworks.com/buffed-foam-grips.htm

Thinking about the .750, .150 wall thickness EPDM. It's hard to find a thin walled foam tube and so far this is what I've come across after doing some searches. Again, without an original I'm guessing if this covering is a good aapproximation.

So, If someone has a hose pic that would be great. If someone has an NOS hose they'd be willing to part with (assuming NOS matches factory original) that would be even better. (slim chance of that)

    Thanks for any help!

    Here's the autozone hose:

I did find this pic on my hard drive, but I don't remember where I copied it from. :Dou:

Does this look right? Looks closer to the replacement on the car now than the Duralast line. Remember, it's for a '71 and they may be unique to that year?

    Ken,
I have an NOS hose on my 71 GS resto and have picures at home that I will post later tonight but the one in your pic does look correct. The left side connects to pump and right to box.

Ken, Your picture is correct. I have 2 originals and they are the same as you show. There are some companies out there that say they can duplicate the hose so I may have to go this route as all aftermarkets I have seen do not look right. I do not know if they can duplicate the foam sleeve however.

Ken, That is funny. Now I look at it that is my picture i Must have sent you. I can tell from my cracked patio that has now been replaced and the black POR I got on the line.

Also Ken, the foam grip site you link may not be correct as they say they say the have a suede like feel. My best hose has a very smooth surface. The one more worn out is more like the suede. The look is similair to the black foam rubber with smooth skin you can get for pipe insulation. Maybe check with an HVAC supply house.

Ken, these guys site says they can duplicate any line. If you want to give it a try I could let you borrow a line so the have an original to go buy.

Thanks for the responses Glenn and Dave. Well, Dave, now I know where the pic came from! LOL

On the insulation- what is the approximate wall thickness? I've been thinking thin and that's where I run into trouble finding anything. As I said, I don't have a physical example to go by. I checked with our HVAC contractors that service our factory and they aren't aware of anything with such a thin wall. That's why I came up with the hand grip material idea.

Dave, your link didn't come through on the guys that duplicate the lines. That would be a great way to go. Not in time for Ohio so I might need to use the Autozone job as the one that's on there isn't safe.

Duane, if you're reading this and judging concours this year, I'm going to have to use a Jedi mind trick to make you forget about this. I just need to find a Jedi. :)

    Thanks again!

    Exactly! Thanks! :TU:

I did order the Edelman unit mentioned in another thread (that you also commented on Dave and where I snagged your picture from) that looks to be closer to the right bends but with a longer hose (big car hose). I may just order up a few samples of the grip material so I at least have something close for now.

    Ken,
Here are pics of my power steering set-up. I found the pressure hose on Ebay and return line was copied from my original.

Ken, Ive got Moreland Hose right down the block from me.

    http://www.morelandhose.com/

I can go over there and see if he can replicate the original style swagings. Im sure he can. I have an original hose from the Riv I can use to show him what they look like.

    Let me know.

    did u check with http://www.gates.com
when i needed to replace the high pressure hose on the power steering on my 72 gs 350, i searched the gates site & got the correct p/s hose and then ordered it from rockauto. rockauto had the wrong part number listed for my car but i ordered by the gates part number and received the correct hose.

Jasons site looks good. The NOS hose on Glens car has the correct bends but I believe the originals were silver zinc and the pad looks different than original. It looks gray. The crimps are laso different. This make sense as GM often changed suppliers and NOS does not always look the same. As far as the padded sleeve the best I could come up with on measuremnts is the entire sleeve installed is approx . 1 1/8" thick. The wall thcikness is about
3/8". Hope that helps. Ken, Let me know if you want me to bring one to Ohio.

About a year ago I bought a new pressure hose for my Olds from a reputable Olds supplier. I was extremely disappointed to receive the same Gates hose I could've purchased locally -- complete with the wrong crimps and a box proudly claiming "Made in Mexico." Needless to say, I sent it back. One of these days I'll find a good reproduction.

    Jason-

If that company is around the corner, I'd be grateful if it wouldn't be too much of a problem to see if they can replicate the crimps. If so, then it would be great if you could bring your original hose out, Dave, and then I'll get it to Jason (J, you going to Ohio?). A wall thickness of 3/8" opens up selection a bit on insulation. Just from pics I thought it was much thinner. I'm sure there's a few guys out there besides you and I that would like a correct '71 hose with proper bends and the insulation. Possibly if several were ordered we might even be able to justify the cost of our obsession!

    Thanks guys!

Brian, sorry to hear you got "hosed" on your replacement. But in reality you'd be lucky if it happened to be correct. Even the NOS stuff, as noted, is often different than what came on the car. Several repopped parts based on NOS have later been found to be incorrect.

I got that style of hose with those bends from In-Line Tube about a year ago. I will look up the part number and pix later on for you. Looks just like that last pixs except is silver steel line. If I recall was $59.00 when got it.

Hmm, Are they making the correct hose now? Ken, I can bring the hose no problem. Just remind me the week of the show.....I would love to have a new correct one as well.......I may have to eat crow on the color of the metal as well. I looked at my original under a magnifying glass and the crimped areas look like they may be gold but is very faded now. Not sure on the steel tube part but it makes sense they were the same color.
