    I do every day...
I probably never will paint the Maggot but I am not concerned with tire rubber on the 1/4's,grease on the sides from road grime and the dents and little rust, but I enjoy the hell out of driving it!

The VIN doesn't denote it as a Stage 1, just a GS-455. The Stage 1 was merely an option like an AM/FM radio.

no my question was directed about the craiglist car at the beginning of this thread. It does not have the original engine according to the listing was my understanding. what other parts are unique to the VIN code on these cars?

The VIN number is on the block and transmission, that's it.

Plus the Frame and don't some, but not all cars have the VIN stamped on the firewall?

Ok and they have been lost to time as you said. So what is remaining on that car that is unique to the GS Stage 1 besides the cowl and vin tag?

I sent Marco the info this summer, but I don't think he has updated the list yet. I don't know if the red stage 1 on CL is in the registry or not.

I was just referring to the mechanical components

Nothing, and there is nothing in the VIN that says it was a Stage 1

Sorry, I realized that & should have noted as such - Wasn't sure if his question was mechanical only or overall on the car and added what I did for clarity, not to contradict what you said.

    S'all good man!

Can you just picture this car rolling off the dealer lot Rich? What a sight it must of been to see that brand new, bright red 4 gear Stage 1 cruising down the highway with its new owner. Someone bought it and was proud of it. Someone sat down at the salesman's desk and picked out all the options. Probably brought it back to the dealer for its first service. If only these cars could talk what stories they would tell

And you know this car was beat on like a rented mule when it was new. The dealer techs probably took their turns even before it was picked up. I can almost bet you the engine was blown by 1974/ 1975

if the condition of the car is any indication the stories it would tell would be stories of horror. a once beautiful car, gallant and full of life and pride, invigorated with its own abilities like a wild predatory animal, then tortured, abused, neglected and badly very badly molested. I say forget the past and restore the poor thing back to beauty and dignity no matter the cost. Make that car whole, physically, mentally and emotionally. And make then numbers match again even if you have to restamp a period correct block and tranny. Im starting to feel sorry for the thing.

My '70 Stage 1 4-sp. that I just purchased last month was a relatively low option special ordered car and supposedly the original owner had a carpeted garage for it. I believe it led a pretty easy life through 2 more owners in '70's (@ 49k mi. & very rust free I don't think it was ever anyone's daily driver). Around 1981, @ only 38k mi. a kid that owned it for less than a year thrashed it & blew the orig. engine, bent the orig rear, and got into 2 minor accidents before trading to the guy I bought it from for a '66 mustang after his father said the car "had to go." It then went back to it's previous sedentary life, having never left the same small town it was originally purchased in, and was always garaged and only accumulated another 10k mi. over the next 25 years, but the damage had been done. Still a very nice car, but it would have been a true survivor otherwise.
