Before this story is lost in time... This car was found on a farm in Texas by Kevin (an Oldsmobile guy), along with a 1967 GS 400 frame and driveline, and a 68 GS 400 4 speed... With parts removed from a 1970 Stage 1. When he first found the car, I was in communication with him and I could have bought this for either $900 or $1200... When I passed, he put this car along with the 68 on eBay and Mike (sawzall) in NY bought them both. This car was mostly untouched and fairly original. It was the ONLY SCO 69 GS 400 painted Deep Gray Mist.
Jason.. I think it went to Maine then to Maryland then back to me in RI then some place else, then to the steel gods….
What did both the 68 & 69 bring on eBay ? that seems like a really good deal that you passed on the 69 for $900-$1200.
I think it was $5000 for BOTH. The 68 had the original engine (outside of the car), the M21 was out of either an olds or a Chevelle, the rear was a 1970 3.64 posi. The engine that was in the 68 either was a 1970 stage 1 with stage 2 pistons in it or something else. There was a thread showing the part number stamps on the pistons and people were freaking out over them…. I ended up getting many of the body panels from that 68 out of my deal with Mike. Years later, I went back down to his shop to buy a few things and left with a pick up bed FULL of parts- tilt, wood wheel, trim, 3.42 posi, power seat assembly, etc. I kick myself in the ass for not restoring that 69. Rot was limited to the base of the windshield, trunk pan, and DS rear floor… the rad support and inner fenders were spotless. That body tag may STILL be in Maryland…Gathersburg…..
Jerry- the cars were actually pretty clean. Quarters, fenders, frames, doors were all pretty much rot free.
Shame the 69 isn't around any longer. I like it! I could see parting the 68, considering the damage to the roof and the effort needed to repair it back then...
