Yeah, .016 gap at widest opening before it starts to close back. I set mine that way with the distributer in the car, and it started right up. When I put the dwell meter on afterwards it was only off about 2*. Good luck with your car, hope you get it going soon. Try not to get frustrated. It seems like there's some little thing we're all missing, but you'll catch it eventually.
Alright guys, so I put everything back together. No go I tried starting it four times. The second time I got her to try to start the third time I think I was going away from the sweet spot I tried once more and BANG!!!! A backfire popped so loud I ended up being embarrassed due to the fact that the alarms for the cars around me went off. I walked away I’m trying to upload the videos but won’t let me upload video only photo
Without me reading 18 pages. Have you only been trying to start this via the key? Have you tried to jump the coil ?(AKA hot wire it).. If not take a wire from Battery pos to coil pos thats hot wire then hit the starter. Do not leave the wire attached if motor does not start.
I have honda 50 if the carb floods the spark plug will well I just replace it. it flat out dead. What brand plugs are in there? Champions are very well known be the wrong ones to use in this area.. where are you?
To me, it doesn’t sound like it’s 180 out. Usually that will sound like duck hunting, alternating with sounding like ignition timing over advanced. Let’s get a dwell meter on it and set what the dwell is doing while cranking. The dwell meter can tell you more than what the dwell is, such as whether the contacts are actually collapsing the field or not.
Is the coil and coil wire good? I know you recently put new wires, but it's possible to have a bad coil wire. I had put new plug wires and all the related stuff on my work truck a few years ago. One day driving down the highway the engine just shut off. Had to have it towed. Mechanic found the coil was shot. Replaced it and it fired right up. 2 weeks later, it happened again. Coil burned out. Another coil. After talking to another mechanic, he said to check the coil wire. Of course I said "I just replaced those". He told me to have the resistance checked on it. If the coil wire is partially burned it will overwork the coil trying to send voltage through. Had it checked, and sure enough, the resistance was way over what the chart listed for amount per foot. O'Reilly's gave me another set of wires and we put them on. It has run fine ever since. For the record, the wires were the high quality Bosch wires. May not be your problem, but who knows?
I like many other's have been watching with interest. I have been pulling for this car to start for days now. Is there no one nearby that has the knowledge to put feet on the ground and help Jimmy? My 2 suggestions. The first happened to me 40 years ago. 1)Pull the cap and look at the points. Do not spray anything inside the distributor. Take a dollar bill and IF the points are closed, put the dollar bill between the 2 metal contact points and use the dollar bill paper to clean any residue between the contacts. Don't ask how I know. 2) Get in the car. Key in to on. Foot to the floor. Key to start. Let it turn over for 2 or 3 seconds, then pump the accellerator 2 times and then slowly push the accelerator pedal to the floor. Jimmy, when you do the 2nd suggestion, does the engine try to start or try to start any better than you showed us in the 3 videos you just posted. 3) Keep listening to Larry and Mike for sure. We are still pulling for ya man. You WILL get past this ! Dadrider.
In the 2nd. video it sounded to me like the timing is retarded. Pull the vacuum advance forward towards the radiator about 3/4" & give it a try. I've also had new/shot fuel fouled plugs do the same. get another set of spark plugs.
Sounds good I walked away earlier and haven’t touched it maybe tomorrow. I appreciate all of you guys maybe better luck tomorrow
I agree but feel he should get the points set properly first, then he can play with the timing, get it running (hopefully) and then set the timing.
I don’t think you are on the compression stroke, so it is 180* out. Pull the #1 plug, put a cork in it & bump the starter slowly till the cork pops! Put some new plugs in it, I prefer ngk, but whatever you like. Pretty sure that’s your problem, try that & it should fire no problem. Good luck, wish you were closer & I’d have it running for ya, but 1500 miles is a way for me to go help out a fellow Buick buddy!!
