I was just curious about what cars people like versus what they grew up around.
I'm not talking about cars that you buy because they may be a good investment, or because they will be a show winner. I'm talking about the cars that you like, the ones that you connect to.
I've bought and sold enough cars to observe different people who are interested in different cars. It really hit me when I flipped a 71 mustang. Just a POS ford I could make some money on to me, but the 16 year old kid who bought it was very excited. I got to thinking that the car was 22 years older than the kid. Like if I would have had a 43 (if they made them) when I was 16. It's all perspective as far as what you think is a cool old car.

My car is a couple years younger than me, and the one that I'm chasing a chance to buy and build is the same age as me. I would also like a mid 50's (ten years older than me) to build a custom from.

Just curious about the age of people vs. the cars they love.

Born the same time as my 65 GS and Skylark.

My nana had a 65 when I was a kid. I guess I blame her for my love of the 65's.:TU:

Thanks for having class and good taste Nana!! Love and miss you.xoxo.

As far as cars go i love the 68 through about 72 muscle cars and i love 50's classics and bombs.
Im only 18. But i honestly think if i could have chose anytime for my teen years to grow up in, it would have definitely been the 50's. The whole family values, slicked back hair, bombs (the cars), and the class of the women and how they dressed in that time I love.

I was born in Fremont, CA in October of '70. GM A bodies were built at the Fremont plant (Code "Z" in the VIN) from '64 through the early '80s. It's now a NUMMI (joint with Toyota)plant. So, I've decided that for my last project (I've had like 22 cars in 15 years, and my wife says, 'enough') I'm going to go with a car built in the same year and place as me.
Funny thing is, a car built in Oct. '70 would be a '71 model. That could be o.k., except you can't find a G.M. car built between mid-Sept. and end of November '70 because of the big U.A.W. strike that year.
So, I've decided to go for a '70 Skylark 2-door hardtop. Anyone want a running '73 Apollo 2-door for 'not much'?

haha i know i could! theres a BIG scene over here, i got some black steelies that ill put on the rivi anytime they have a car show around here cause they love it, they want me to join there little greaser club cause the rivi and i totally would, but the girlfriend dissapproves (she actually gets jealous of all the pin up dressed girls when we go).
But its alright, since she wont let me do that she is dressing up like one and getting a photoshoot with the rivi done by a pro photographer in exchange. Can't wait to have those pictures.
    And thanks a lot man.

I was born in 1993 but the cars I was brought up around were much older. somewhere around here there is a picture of me standing on the seat of a 1964 Mustang "driving" when I was about 2. Plus I have been going to the drag races for as long as I can remember. This just proves you gotta start 'em young!

As for what culture/era I would have preffered to grow up in, I would have to pick the 70's. I have long hair and a goatee (I'm 15 and I often get mistaken for a senior or adult) and wear old band and car T-shirts and denim exclusively, so I aleready look the part. I also really like the look of the street machines of that era and am often tempted to do a 70's tribute car with my Skylark with sidepipes, slotted mags, and a stinkbug stance. Anyone have vintage pics of their 1970's style steet machine they want to share?

(idk but its a buick) BOMB (its a badass car, looks all rusty and everything on the outside, 455 on the inside and amazin suspension feels like your in a new car) Thinkin Buick Boys Salinas,California. Not sure yet.
If you cant join em, make your own right?

Good to see I'm not the only one who over analyzes things!

I want a 65, which is the year I was born. Actually I would take a 64 also, but 65 was the first year of the GS, and the year that muscle cars took off, so as similar as the 64 cars are, I prefer 65.
I also love model a cars, and 55 through 57 full sized cars, Buick Special, the tri 5 chevy, olds, all of them. These were the cars that were
"hot rods" when I was a kid. The Early A body cars were the cool classic muscle cars, and 70 - 72 Buick, Olds and Chevy were the "cheap" easy to come by kids muscle cars. They all still kinda hold the same place as far as ranking to me.
    I love my 67, I will build a 65 when I find a decent one that's not a pile of junk and I can afford it, and I will build a model A or a 55 - 57 custom Buick or olds.

You're growing up in pretty good times. Take it from someone who was a kid in the 70's, it was a good time to be a kid but EVERYONE I knew was poor. They talk about how bad things are right now, but literally everyone I knew was pretty poor back then.
The street machines were OK, but most people couldn't afford the cars that you think about. Muscle cars were too new to own, but lots of cars came with big blocks. Put some air shocks on them, a pair of craigers, an 8 track and you had it made! I never saw a goatee till many many years later than that. I do still dress about the same as back then, well after I was old enough to tell my mom I don't want to wear cords. I've pretty much always worn jeans, t-shirt and a flannel. Only thing different is instead of cheap tennis shoes, I wear boots (as in cowboy boots).

I'm going to have to disagree with you. I think the "family Values" would drive me insane! I also think the women dress a lot better these days! (as far as what you'd see walking down the street anyway...)

I was a mere lad of 13 when my 70 rolled out the factory door. Even then I was a car nut. Grew up in the middle of the muscle car years and still can't get enough of them. I like the look of a 56 Bel-air (my birth year) over the 57's and 55's but would still rather have the car I have.

I was born in 72, which was the same year my Skylark was sold. I've always had a soft spot for some of the 80's G bodies and third gen Camaros. I took my driver's license test in my dad's 86 GN and had one of my own for several years. When I go to car shows I'm always drawn to the muscle cars. Some of the hot rods like the Model A's etc just bore me. I appreciate the work that goes into them but they seem like the most cliche cars out there. Most aren't fast, which is probably the most important criteria to me in a collector car.

:gp: my grandmother had a 68 GS. my dad had a 69 gs stage 1 and so did his brother. thats probably why i have a 69 myself. I've owned many others, but this one is the one that was my dad's brothers thats been in my family since April of 1969. Which is probably also why I have spent a fortune restoring it.
