Because consumers are irrational beings that have subjective choices that are allowed to be acted on through free trade and capitalism.

When I needed a sedan and wanted a stick, should I have bought an American car because that was my duty? No, I bought a car that suited my needs best.

Beginner's econ. shows us that no one can be an expert at everything. America can't do everything well. There are other countries and cultures that specialize in things that interest me. If I want crystal, I'll be sure to check out the wares from Murano. If I want porn, I may get Swedish. If I want Pinot Noir, France would be my bet. Besides, I've travelled the world, and I think if I purchased everything America, it would be scary. :eek2: There are paradigms that other countries and cultures have that offer things that we can't. That's why benchmarking is so important.
