When to use synthetic oil?

One thing not mentioned is an individual engines oil change requirement due to carburetor jetting and cam overlap. Increased overlap and richer jetting can contaminate oil significantly faster than stock cam timing and jetting. Fuel dilution of the oil will make that oil unusable, and more likely to cause wear.

BTW, the theory that changing your oil too often causes increased wear, is something that I choose not to believe. Even if it is discussed in an engineering school, I don't think most engineers would agree with it. I liken it to doctor opinions. How many times have you seen doctors reverse themselves when it comes to healthy life style decisions. Someone else does a study that points in a different direction, and we have new guide lines. I like to listen to all sides, but then go with my gut, and common sense.

This is a great thread, but people are putting too much thought into it... We are driving vintage vehicles that generally see less than 5k miles a season (atleast in my case). Change your oil once a season... Todays oils are far superior to "the good old days". I choose to run Joe Gibbs Racing oil. It has all the ZDDP you could ever need, and also has anti-foaming agents which are needed for high RPM operation. Use a good oil filter, choose the proper viscosity for your bearing clearances and you will be fine. I almost forgot what the original post was about... I have run literally hundreds of engines on the dynomometer. Everything from development, mapping to durability, and oil aeration testing. I will say this... Synthetic oil, regardless if it is semi syn, or full syn, is superior to minreal oils. We use it as a "factory" fill on all of our hipo vehicles. No issues with ring seating, or blow-by. Now the choice is yours... if your doing a cam break-in and are going to change the oil at your first 500, then NO I would not use synthetic. It cost too much!

    Hi folks,

I agree that this thread, while extremely important and thought-provoking, as probably "run its course."

One final question, though: where is the test place to buy these high-zinc oils such as Joe Gibbs, in case quantities?

    Dynotech1,

Thanks! I see there is a dealer about 3 hours from my house, near Myrtle Beach. I may just take a drive there, as it's always worth visiting that pretty coastal area.

In my thread I meant to say "has run its course," not "as" (sic).

Anyone try Kendall Gtr-1? I run 2 quarts 20w-50 (extra zinc) and 3 quarts 10w-40 in my stock 350. I figure with stock low spring pressure the dedicated formulation should be enough. Of course on a more performance oriented motor I would still use a bottle of zddp.
