The best shift points are the point where the torque from the gear you're currently in falls below that of what it would be for the next higher gear. If you plot driveshaft torque (engine torque times transmission gear ratio) for each gear versus driveshaft or wheel speed, best shift points will be the intersection of the two curves. In those cases where mechanical rpm limits prevent reaching an intersection, then obviously best shift points will be at the maximum safe rpm limit.

what carter do you have? if its an adapted one get a holley 600 vac secondary instead if not sounds as if you are a little rich or advance in distibutor is coming on too slow or maybe total timing general rule is all in by 2500 rpm and 34-38 degrees total timing I shift mine when it sounds like its ready!:Comp: :TU:

    wow,

    very different opinions, i see !! :eek2:

but their is one way to find out :

as soon as the snow is gone and i can take some torque on the good old german street, i will take the lark to our "track". it`s a raod along the Rhein (river).
and than i have to drive down the track some times and make some time meassures.:TU:

i still wait for my hurst shifter and linkage, cause my stock has seen it`s best times long ago....long time for shifting....

    another question -

( i always have thousands of them, but who to ask in good old germany...
i don`t know one 65 buick stick shifter in the club..)

my tranny is new overhault, but in the first gear it is singing .... normal ??

perhaps cause the old shift linkage ?? not correct adjusted ??

    thanks ...
