hi everyone,:beer this days i drive my 65 buick ( 355 wildcat with hardened valve seats 100 octan ) against a z4 bmw out the village to next village, two times, i had the feeling when i shift earlier i am a little faster.(and don`t look bad) is that right ? the question : when to shift with the 355 4 speed to be fast ? i mean at which rpm, ? better to work with the torque or the horsepower ? which is highest rpm to give without killing the engine ? ( 5500 i reached yet ):TU: regards michael
Shift early usually means slower elapsed times in the quarter mile, but a higher speed at the top end. Shift later usually means faster elapsed times in the quarter mile, but slower speed at the top end.
If the car belongs to you shift at a lower rpm. If you barrowed or stold it shift when it stops pullin. Dan
when to shift skylarkcruiser- trial and error is the best way to obtain the best shift points for ur car i normally would shift 500 rpm before the car would nose over or stop pulling. no reason to go any higher. lots of cars work better when short shifting. some cars even run better with different rpm for each gear. ur car will let u know. in the end the object is to get into high gear as quick as possible. good luck and have fun but be safe:3gears: ralph
thanks a lot.... thanks a lot ! today i adjusted the ignition and drived it again with early shifting and the lark allways stocks a little if i kicked down it`s less than before adjusting, but it`s still there....it`s better without aircleaner.... at the carter i turned 2 1/2 rounds from start ( the two screws infront ). and the acceleration pump should be new... what else could it be? michael
Your 300 cid 355 Wildcat motor was rated at 210 hp @ 4600 rpm and 355 ftlbf @ 2400 rpm. So if your cam is stock there is no need to rev past 4600 rpm. Post a question in the "mixing box" section about the (two screws in front) on your Carter carb. With a Q-jet it is best to tune the front screws (idle mixture screws) untill max vacuum is seen on vacuum gauge while car is running in gear with wheels blocked. More than likely 2.5 is okay but not ideal because there are so many variables.
1st gear in most cars take a full 2 second count to wind out. When you wind out first you can hear it reach max rpm. Thats when i bump mine to 2nd same with 3rd. 1st to 2nd shift on my 350 is around 4000 to 4200 rpm or so. If im not mistaken the 350-2 almost drives the same as a 340-2 or a 300-4. The redlines I mean. What i do with muscle cars I'm not familiar with is start of slow in first and watch the tach. Take notice of where the tach doesn't want to climb anymore in 1st. Shift approx 500 rpms or so b4 reaching that redline mark you set for yourself.
hey,hey ! my 355 wildcat is rated at 250 hp and 355 torque i am sure... my 310 wildcat was rated at 210 hp and 310 torque.... the 355 is much more agressive as the 310. this is why i changed the engine.... michael
BACK IN 1970 (YES 1970 ALL NEW GS 350 4SPD 315HP POSI -NO A/C JUST POWER STEERING) MY GS WITH ONLY A JUSDON MAGNETTO WOULD SHIFT AT 5000 RPM WITH NO PROBLEM-THE ONLY THING IT COULDN T DO WAS GO PAST THAT BY 100 RPMS OR SO.
' Okay well thats good, but the hp peak is probly still under 5000 rpm. I still think you should look into fine tuning the front screws. Goodluck.
If you are drag racing and not willing/able to speed shift consider going straight from 1st to 4th at about 5000-6000 RPM. You won't get as much power out of the engine as you would ripping through all the gears and keeping it closer to the sweet spot, but you will gain some time back by only shifting once. With the good low end torque of the buick motors this is often worth it.
I live in canada and my Century was built in freemont in 76 so its in miles/h while our signs are in km/h. I was going 100.....
i never used my tach to shift on the street. I 'm the guy who turns down the music to listen to the engine for shifting on a manual.. Tach is useless to me while using a manual on the(mustang)street. I use my tach all the time on my (Lark) automatic. Summit Racing has a cool Tachometer with a built in shiftlight for 35 bux..Can't find one cheaper anywhere and it Looks pretty good too. http://store.summitracing.com/partd...4294925228+4294815748+400304+115&autoview=sku Best Bargin Gague I've ever Bought. Picked up a 2nd one for the Boat.
