i was just wondering what a stock 1971 buick skylark 4 door sedan would run in the 1/4. Heres my set up so far Stock internal 1971 350/th350 4bbl carb q-jet Poston intake. running with 1" spacer Poston headers with dual 2 1/2" exh. and flowmaster 2 chamber muffs. Stock open diff 8.5 with optional 3.08 gears. HEI distributor. Runs 12* initial timing. Pretty much all ive done so far. Im building the externals first while my other motor is in our shop having its internals redone. This car pulls hard from a dead stop. I plan on a posi very soon and 3.42 gears/ shift kit and maybe a torque converter. So what do you guys think it would run? Oh yeah i got an edelbrock air cleaner also.. atleast 50hp from it right?
My '72 Skylark ran 15.54 with stock open 2.56 rear, stock trans and the original stock 350 with only a T/A intake, Holley 600 and 2-1/2" dual exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers. That was done just leaving it in drive and letting it shift itself at roughly 4800rpms according to my old tach. Your headers and gears should help you run a little quicker too as long as everything is in good tune. Ken
Thats what i was hoping to hear. 15.54 isnt bad for a stock motor that made 150hp. Mine shows it was 260hp/360ft lbs stock. I dont plan on letting it shift on its own, Personally i think its guttless once it shifts into second gear while its shifting on its own. I can get the rpm's higher with me controlling the shift points. hmmmm i'll have to take it to pueblo colo. this summer and see what it can actually do. Anyone know what these cars weigh? 71 skylark 4 door sedan. KELLY blue book and N.A.D.A have it at 3475lbs
I don't know about the 71 4 door, but my friends 69 full weight GS with A/C was around 3650 LB. Take it to the track, I'm always interested to hear what guys cars run. Then you can make some changes and see how much you picked up in the 1/4 mile.
My full weight '70 GS with an aluminum intake + a stock intake in the back seat and me in the drivers seat (270lbs) weighed in at 4180... figure 70lbs for the stock intake and 270lbs for me and you're looking at right around 3800lbs.
hahaha im a 6'3 153-158lb string bean. oh well beats carrying around a belly lol. Yeah i'll have to do that. I can run all day at the track for $10. By then i'll have the posi and 3.42 gears. Also, Im saving to buy a set of 1970 heads with over sized 1.92/1.55 valves off another board member. Any Horse power gains with them? I cant afford to have them ported right away But PAE had some good prices for a head job. Think i should let them port the poston intake also?
i guess thats not to bad. not for 400ish hp. i also plan on 10:1 pistons. I saw that poston sells those hyper something pistons, but also read that you cant run nitrous with them? i dont plan on running nitrous but just sometime in the future if i decided to run a 100shot, would they hold up? and what would 400ish hp get me into in the 1/4?
It takes ABOUT 350 hp to the rear wheels to get in the 12's with a 3800 pound car. The way I look at it if the motor makes 400 hp before the nos shot you should be able to get in the 11's. A couple of interesting things in the following threads 1. A 150 shot on a stock 350 made a 12.6 1/4 mile time 2. A 200 shot on a neer stock 350 made a 11.2 1/4 mile time 3. A 400 hp 350 with a 125 shot made a 11.8 1/4 mile time (13's without nos) Read this old thread: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=68329&highlight=12's http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=24191&page=2&pp=25&highlight=12's
My 71' has 2.56 gears right now(soon to be 3.42's)but when I ran it at Temple,TX it ran a best of 15.58 with a TA Stage One intake, fully ported heads,B&M Shift Kit and a TA 212 cam.I think the gears, .020 compressed steel head gaskets to raise the compression a half a point, 2,400 RPM stall convertor and a bigger cam is what I need to get into the 14 to lower 13 sec. runs.....I hope. Doesn't help that it's a convertible also. The top frames aren't exactly light.
Thats not too bad for 2.56 gears, and they are fun on the highway... I bet you could go faster with just tuning and slicks.
13.2 our little ole 350 ran 13.2....10.8-1..ta310...ported heads...msd...holley 750...2400 stall....3.42 posi....I'm sure more than I can think of and stock body parts... we tune the heck out of it and they do like alot of gas ...but it sure goes !! mark
What type of 750 Holley are you running? Is it a double-pumper?I know my 600 cfm Edelbrock is holding it back also.Main reason I haven't changed it yet is the gas mileage but since the Buick isn't my daily driver anymore I'll be stepping up the carb also.
Sounds like my buddies car. Same cam, 10:1 compression, TA intake, headers with 2.5" exhaust, home port job, Holley 750 DP, 3000 stall, and 3.36 posi with 26" tall slicks. Full weight 69 GS went 13.32 in the 1/4.
holley actually ..it's a 750 vaccum...85 power valve with 75 front jets and 78 rears ...the change to a 85 power valve made a huge difference...It has 2 - 1" spacers also ... Mark
I was also going to do some experimenting with a 1" 4 hole spacer on top and a 1" open spacer on the bottom to see what kind of results those yielded. o No:
running 350 Hi, I thought I would drop in an add my full body 82 T-top Sport Coupe sbb to you list of runners. Street tires at 25lbs, 14.4 / 93.8 1/4. It is a work in progress, drag radials, shorty headers and few other things on the list. I think that low 13's, maybe 12's are in future, just takes $$$. Diver
