What kind of crayons did the factory use when they marked our cars?

Does anyone know what the factory used for marking our cars? Did they use regular crayons or a special grease marker? I want to put the factory markings back on my Stage 1 since I've gone to concours level.

Thanks for any info you guys(and girls) can give me.

That's interesting,Owen. What about if the markings had different colors other than white?

Beths wagon still has a yellow production mark behind and slightly above the brake booster on the firewall. Looks like a grease marker.
And its a Flint car if that means anything.

Ok,so if they did use a grease marker, what color was it and where was it placed? I know they had different markings depending on how the car was ordered.

    Carl,

Disc brake cars had a "D" on the firewall, behind brake booster in yellow. Paint code was written behind voltage regulator on firewall, again in yellow.

To do the markings right, you'll have to pull the booster and regulator. Last time I did that, it was not fun.

Moron me repainted the firewall, painted right over it, didn't take any pictures before painting it...

Here's a pic of the code on the firewall behind the brake booster. As you can see, it's yellow. The "DC" stands for Disk brakes and Clutch. Perhaps someone will chime in with the correct code for your disk brake/auto car.

This is the code just forward of the hinges for the driver's side door. I believe the "571" represents the 571st car assembled on the particular day my car went down the assy line. I'm posting it here more to show color as it was well preserved beneath the fender. I touched the bottom of the "1" and it wiped off easily, possibly giving a clue to what type of marker used.

I believe I read somewhere here to use a welder's marker.

Here's an example of the welder's markers. There's a welding supply house on the corner of Honeyspot Rd and Lordship Blvd in Stratford just down from I-95 (ABCO) that should have what you need.

    No problem, Owen.

I wonder if they were originally yellow (per Brad) but with heat turned white???

Mine looked like a v not connected on the bottom . It was next to the non power brakes toward the pass. side. I did a templet and put it back with a yellow greese pencil. 69 GS 400 ST.1. power steering only.

    Dave,
If your car has manual front drums then the "v not connected on the bottom" was what was left of the "M" for manual brakes.

Duane, Thanks it is nice to learn something every day. It funny you said that as the paint did not have the road grime next to the replaced master cyl. that the "V" lead into it makes sense now. Thanks

my 10 D stage 1 had MC in yellow over the master cylinder. i assume this meant manual cylinder. dont know. the car has manual drums. HTH, henry

Henry, "M" would be for the manual brakes, and "C" would be for clutch, as yours is a 4 speed.

By the way, I opened the part and it looks great!

    Thanks again, Jeff
