Tried to think of someone not already mentioned.Couldn't come up with anything. So: Jimi Hendrix Jerry Garcia John Cipollina Carlos Santana And for the new bands, that dude from TOOL !!!!!
Im suprised that no one mentioned Yngwie Malmsteen Rising force, Brad Gillis from Night Ranger and Jeff Watson I know they arent the best but great guitarists
Chuck Berry. Although I have heard some of his mistakes and he was often a little out of tune. But, without him where would we be. John Fogarty. He can do more with an E7 than anyone else I have heard. SRV is one of the most versatile axe men I had ever heard. Chet Atkins. I know he is not strictly rock, but not many are better. Duane Eddy. He wasn't the most talented, but he was a ground breaker. Bo Diddly. He was the most fun. Glen Campbell. I know he is not strictly rock, but don't tell the Beach Boys that!!!
Interesting list of guitarists. How about these.. Greg Lake ( Emerson, Lake, and Palmer) Joe Walsh Robin Trower
Brian Setzer & Eric Johnson Both Awsome! Page is the man! More killer riffs then anyone! Larry McCray best blues player I ever jammed with (probly not known nationaly) but Michigan knows him. P.S. I'm goin to see TED tonight @ DTE nanana na na na.................:bla:
Frampton, VanHalen, Satch, Vai, Malcom Young, Ritchie Blackmore, Warren DiMartini, wow... way too many to list.
I have to say pretty much all mentioned sofar are great guitarists. For my self I would like to add Duane Allman, Dicky Betts, Steve Gaines, & Lesley West !!!
"...there is a fine line between clever and stupid..." I love that movie!!! Where would the world be without classics like "Big Bottom" "Bitch School" and "Lick My Love Pump."
SRV - Hendrix - B.B. King - Albert King - Buddy Guy - Clapton - John Lee Hooker - Jonny Lang - Kenny Wayne Sheperd - Frampton - VanHalen - George Thorogood - and the list goes on............ Not a guitarist or rock, but on mandolin Chris Thile can really rip it up. :TU: http://www.myspace.com/christhile
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TV9Rz79TWB8 .... oh, what the Yardbirds could have been. that link is, Layla by - Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Joe Cocker, Jan Hammer, James Hooker, Kenny Jones, Ronnie Lane, Andy Fairweather Low, Simon Phillips, Paul Rogers, Fernando Saunders, Chris Stainton, Ian Stewart, Charlie Watts & Bill Wyman... its a good one to watch. anyone think this kind of music coming from a 15 year old is odd...p
its Yngwie, but who cares he has largest ego in the world. and here is a really funny Yngwie Video. (parody) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz4jBXqLbx8
I saw the Nuge 11 times in concert, (maybe thats why I have a ringing sound in my ears that never leaves) He was not the best with guitar fundamentals but very fast and a master at using feed back, I enjoyed his early stuff. This is my short list. Hendrix Duane Allman Jimmy Page Clapton Beck Vanhalen SRV Nugent Lowell George (little feat)
Here's one I don't think has been mentioned - Tommy Bolin. He was in a Denver-based band called Zephyr, then replaced Joe Walsh when he left The James Gang, replaced Ritchie Blackmore when he left Deep Purple, did two solo albums and some work on albums by jazz drummers Billy Cobham and Alphonse Mouzon. I don't know if he rates as one of the greats, but he could certainly play the guitar.
